Hydroxycarbamide side effects

My partner commenced hydroxycarbamide about a month ago and although he has not suffered any major side effects he has just started to get a few mouth ulcers. Has anybody else had this reaction and if so what did they find helpful to treat them.

Hi, yes this is a common thing with Hydroxy. My hospital gives us Difflam mouthwash which is good or warm salt water, regular swishing around mouth and spitting out will help. They will perhaps come less often as his body gets used to the drug. Best wishes, Frances

My dentist recommended AO ProVantage available from Periosciences. Very cooling soothing gel, used for chemo patients, no prescription required. Right now I seem to be on the perfect dosage experiencing few side effects. Don't despair once they get bloods under control they'll work on reducing the dosage.

Hi. My doctor has me use 1teaspoon baking soda & 1 teaspoon salt dissolved in a glass of water. Swish around your mouth as long as you can and then spit it out. Then repeat a few times each day. Often if I drink water immediately before taking HU and immediately after I have fewer mouth sores. Good luck. Hope things improve soon. Katie

Medijel from Poundland is excellent! I use Iglu when the ulcers are really bad. Effective but hard to apply.

My husband gets them and his heamotologist gave him a mouthwash simular to corsodyl. Your partner needs to let them know that he has them as it is a known side effect. Hope he is ok otherwise.

HI AND WELCOME TO THE FORUM. I get mouth ulcers and use the Anbesol liquid as well. I also use a mouth wash called Chlorhexidine Gluconate. I got the mouth wash originally from my GP but now buy it at Bodycare for under £2 when I need. This combination works well for me. Good luck for the future. Steve

Hi There

Yes I've been on the drug for 2 months n been pretty good so far. But I get them occasionally and they haven't worried me.BUT the last 2 days have been hell. I've been using the difflam gel but even that's not doing much. I'm going to the chemist today to see if I can get a mouthwash. I'm in Australia so not sure what I can get here from everyone's suggestions. Thanks everyone fir the helpful tips much appreciated .

Thanks for your comments. My partner has only just started suffering from the mouth ulcers and they are not too bad at the moment. He has been rinsing his mouth with warm salt water but will be seeing the chemist himself and discussing the suggestions that others have made, if they do not clear up.

I too suffered with mouth ulcers, lots of them to the point where I could not eat solids for a while. I used a mouth wash which treats tonsilitus and it seemed to take the edge of the sting. I don't get them anymore.

Thanks for your helpful comments. Do you use the mouth wash regularly to prevent them. Do you remember the name of this?

Hey Joy. I too suffered huge mouth ulcers when I started Hydrea. The best advice I received was to use Calendula tincture in a little water and to gargle twice a day. Love the fact that it's totally natural and it worked like a bomb. That stuff is truly magic and a potent natural antiseptic, and there is nothing 'pharmaceutical' in it. They go away when your body adjusts and only really reappear if your dosage changes. Good luck!

Thanks Jos. Will give this a try. Where do you buy it from?
