Restless legs

Hello,

I don't post very often but I always read the messages.I was very interested to see all the posts relating to restless legs - something I had never heard of before today.

My haematologist has just prescribed quinine for restless legs and I was wondering if anyone has any experience with this drug. A bit nervous adding new medication to the mix!

I have jak2 ET. Taking hydroxycarbamide & aspirin (and tamoxifen for breast cancer)

Hi Anne, you can get a nice shot of quinine from tonic water, (I'm sure it will still be there if a little gin or vodka was accidentally splashed in), and also helps with muscle cramps. I've also drunk it for fuzzy headaches, so a pretty good store cupboard remedy! Enjoy!

Hi Anne, I don't know anything about quinine but I have always used magnesium for restless legs. It works well for me. Hope you get relief soon. Merry x

Hi. I find exercise and ensuring im drinking lots of water ? Gentle stretches like yoga is good - It doesn’t stop it but helps reduce symptoms. Also alcohol aggravates it. The nhs site has helpful info too

Yr concern about mixing meds’ is very real and someone on this forum mentioned the Medscape app which I’ve been using and it’s brilliant.

Hi Anne, I have PV and the dreaded RLS my GP prescribed Ropinirole especially made for RLS been on them for about a year and they are now almost non-existent, but along with thr 'jerky legs' I was having Quinine for night-time and daytime cramps, been on that for about 9 months and it has had no effect on RLS or cramps. then my husband saw an article from USA stating that Quinine has been banned, I told my GP and she said good. so I urge you to read up the sites available before taking it and also challenge your Haemo, they should know about the ban and if not why not. best wishes my friend. june.

I didn't really believe in restless leg syndrome until I experience it for myself! In my case I had been prescribed an antihistamine for my itching. They decided to give me one that would also help me sleep but it had the opposite effect and I was kept awake by moving my legs all over the place! I forget which antihistamine it was and I have a different one now which is ok - although my partner complained I kicked him the other night! When I looked up RLS it gave antihistamines as a possible cause. We all react differently to different drugs. I'd be wary of quinine though. I am now suffering with cramp at night and just had Magnesium added to my next blood test. I'll let you know the results. Best wishes, Jan

RLS is Magneaium deficiency, get some magneaium flakes and put 3-4 good handfuls in a bath and soak in it for half an hour, it will take a minimum of two years to build up your reserves.

My husband suffers quite severely from RLS associated with Rheumatoid Arthritiis. It can be truly relentless. His legs jump terribly when at rest disturbing his relaxation and sleep etc.

He's prescribed gabapentin and pramipexole for it which helps him considerably.

Xx
