Afternoon! I’m looking for some recommendations for what to eat after my weights based gym workout sessions. I’ve been buying peanut butter protein balls from the leisure centre cafe which taste really lovely but it’s costing me a fortune. I’m looking for something I can take with me that I can either make easily at home or buy in a big pack to make it more economical.
Any suggestions?

Here’s what hubby does after weights training: he uses protein powder and after a workout has a muesli with protein powder added. How much? Depends. If for breakfast a whole scoop, if mid morning, maybe half. Added extras: bananas, grated apple, yoghurt, etc
Here’s what I have after morning runs: (note: I don’t have breakfasts before a run, just water) I generally make myself a protein smoothie. Sometimes with fresh berries (blackberries coming up), sometime green smoothie. A good bullet blender is in use daily in our home.
The attached blueprint is taped on the door of one of our kitchen cupboards.
Will be looking out to see what others do. I could also do with some new ideas.
Smoothies are something I really wish I liked but can’t get on with. I think it’s the texture because I don’t like thick milkshakes either. Thanks for sharing though-I’m sure it will be useful for someone not as awkward as I am!! Some lovely suggestions on your chart.
🍏I never eat before I run either. I have plain yoghurt & then wholewheat sourdough toast with avocado 🥑 (Sometimes berries too.) little pots of yoghurt would be easy to transport to the gym.. peanut butter sandwich maybe??
I almost always have toast for breakfast so that’s my usual pre-run food. I really like fruit and seed oatcakes if I’m running later in the day and need to eat something. I don’t do well without food. What to eat and when for running has been a work in progress and I finally feel I’m winning there now.
Why haven’t I thought of a peanut butter sandwich for post weights before?! That’s the ultimate in quick and easy. Tomorrow is sorted!! Yoghurts are a good idea too-thanks so much for the suggestions.
That's exactly what I was going to suggest! If the peanut butter is doing the trick then a peanut butter butty, especially cut up into quarters, is the ideal post run/workout snack!
Cant be very helpful really as have not got the experience... post run treats, avocado on toast...peanut butter on toast could be taken with you? I love cold toast though and anything on cold toast would suit me!
Those are great suggestions! For some reason, I’d got it into my head that it needed to be protein bars etc and I’d totally forgotten about real food like toast and sandwiches. 🤦♀️
I love post run food. I’m just back from an evening run (lots of fun except the new garmin kept shouting at me for going too fast!) and I’ve had a tin of Greek butter beans with feta and pitta. That hit the spot!
I love Italian week too! I always stock up on the bags of dried mixed veg when they’re in. My absolute favourite quick dinner for post work, pre Zumba is braised lentils from the freezer (I make them in a massive batch), passata/tomato sauce from a jar and a big handful of those dried veg heated up together then eaten on top of pasta. Sometimes fresh veg get added too-mushrooms, aubergine and courgettes are often hanging around the fridge!
Not sure if this would be suitable? (I've just made these last week and apart from clogging up the blender and having to mix in batches, they turned out ok!) thebodycoach.com/blog/peanu...
I took it a step too far and tried to recreate a 'millionaire' version but as I am allergic to milk & soya, my caramel turned out a bit too runny with my dairy substitutes and hasn't set - so back to the drawing board (and have just discovered they make a vegan condensed milk so have ordered a tin and will see how that goes).
I’ve used the Nestle vegan condensed milk-it’s pretty good! I love the idea of a millionaire version. Millionaires shortbread is one of my favourite treats.
I recommend adding some slices of tofu to your peanut butter sandwich. Just remember to dry off the slices on some kitchen towel first, so the sandwich doesn't get soggy. You get a nice hit of protein - tofu is just pure soybean protein - and it adds a delicious creamy layer to the sandwich. Plus there is a healthy fibre effect too. PB & T sandwiches are win, win, win. Can use firm or silken tofu, both are good. Put the leftover tofu in a container covered in water, so you can use it again later. Keeps like that for about a week.
I just looked at the salt content of my Smoked Tofu (1.7g salt per 100g) and I withdraw my recommendation! Plain tofu with your own choice of flavorings sounds better!
Hi! Those peanut butter protein balls are great, but can be costly. Try making your own protein bars at home using nuts, oats, and whey protein. It's budget-friendly and lets you customize the flavors. Also if u are interested u can try this useful workout betterme.world/articles/wal.... Enjoy your post-workout snack! 🏋️♂️🥜
There are many recipes on line for Protein Balls or Energy Bites. They’re easy to make and can be kept in the freezer. They’re even tasty frozen. You can modify them with various ingredients.
