BCUK Pilates Days 1-5 How is it going?

Just checking in with everyone to see how their start into this exciting daily Pilates practice has been, and to roll out our virtual mat here on the forum for the first 5 days.

In those first 5 days there will be 2 on demand and 3 live practices, which hopefully we managed to catch up with on demand. And having had my first experience of a live yoga practice recently, I know how fraught the preparations for live sessions potentially can be.

Our introduction to this challenge, daily list and links to sign up pages are at

healthunlocked.com/strength...

Days 1 to 5

• Friday 1 LIVE @12.30pm25minsLet’s move

• Saturday 2 LIVE @9am45minsFlow

• Sunday 3 On-demand15minsStretch & release

• Monday 4 On-demand15minsEnergise

• Tuesday 5 LIVE @12.30pm25minsStrengthen

I actually couldn’t do the first one live as I was at work, and the email suggests it’ll come through tomorrow!

So how good was it?

Hello everyone,

I hear at least one of us has done the first live session! For those of us who couldn’t connect live, the recordings will come through via emails tomorrow. So how was it?

We are on hold, I shouldn’t sign up to things, a vague headache and gripey tum turned into a full blown bug that has laid me flat and made me very cross,

Awwhhh 😘 I did have a migraine all day today (thanks to menopause), so I commiserate. But now it’s gone, so I’m all 😃😁 and just about to do my first yoga of the month with YWA and hubby.

Glad you feel better, enjoy yoga

Hope you feel better soon! We've all been so good at keeping away from people because of covid that our immune systems are going to take a few blows this autumn and winter 😱

I'm very behind - only just done day 1 but I have been Centreparcs and been doing lots of exercise. Loved day 1 just what I needed after day at the desk! Hope everyone is still enjoying it.

Yup, I’m about to do day 11, so 2 days behind!

I've already put this on the previous post from CBDB, but it makes sense to copy it across to here -

First session done ✅So far so good.Apparently there were 80+ people practicing live.

I definitely felt that practicing yoga helped, I'm not sure how easy it would be to follow if you'd never done anything like it before. I'm guessing you'd probably need to watch more and do less

I'll be interested to see what others think.

I'll be playing catch up tomorrow as I can't make the live session.

Thanks! 80+ … so did you all have camera on?

dijep profile image
dijep30D Graduate in reply toCBDB

No mostly people had them off. Annoyingly a few people had forgotten to mute themselves, but first one there are bound to be a few hiccups I guess.

Day1: well, for me it was day 1 today, rather than yesterday, as I wasn’t able to do it at the time of the live session. This than had the consequence of me missing the live session this morning, as I needed to do yesterday’s session first. It is, after all, a progressive series.

So I fear I’ll be always a day late, but it should not deter from the experience I think. I just might miss out on any life sessions.

As I think I’m not ready to show my unwieldy movements in public view anyway, it’s just the same I’d think. Someday I’ll go to a live session, something I haven’t done done now for … 🤔💭… mmh, it must be ca 5 to 6 years now.

Today was a gentle introduction. The leg circles I could feel will be very good to work out those glutes. Very slight differences to the movements from what I know of YWA and MVMT keeps it interesting.

So god intro, so far. Maybe a tad too low in effort and I don’t believe I’m actually saying that. But I’m sure it will ramp up!

Audio is not as good as it could be but otherwise it felt like a live session.

I'm a total disaster zone atm. We've got a leaky roof and it's been raining and very windy, which makes for a bad combination! Luckily the scaffolding went up yesterday for repairs to start sometime this week, just hoping the weather settles down a bit 🤞 I completely forgot about the challenge and the email reminders were being sent to some weird folder, which didn't help! Hoping to catch up on it over this week. Well done to those of you who have started it 👏👏👏

Hope the rain soon stops and your roof becomes waterproof I think a few of us will be on catch up with this one.

I shouldn’t sign up to stuff, jinxed it fir us

CBDB profile image
CBDBAdministratorGraduate Gold in reply toBeatlesforever

Oh dear! Yes, we’ve been meaning to do our gutters for the last couple of years, but due to needing scaffolding alongside a busy road, we just never managed to arrange it.

So hope your leaky roof will be fixed quickly!

The practice does start gentle, so it is an enjoyable 40 min.

dijep profile image
dijep30D Graduate in reply toBeatlesforever

Oh no a leaky roof isn't the best at any time but the rain and wind has been awful recently and seems spread across the whole country. I've given up counting the number of soakings I've had while walking Alfie this week.I hope that work can start on your roof and that you feel able to start on the Pilates this week.

👍

Day 3: Ok, so I’m not keeping to the right order, but after my 10k this morning, the stretch and release session from today just sounded so good, and it was! Some nifty floor-based stretches that felt sooo good after feeling quite tight in my upper body due to the run!

dijep profile image
dijep30D Graduate

Well I've been catching up today and because of time available I did todays 15 minutes first and then the 45 minute session later on in the day. I enjoyed the 15 minute session focusing a lot on arms and shoulders , I have increasingly creaky shoulder and elbow joints so I think they appreciated the attention.

The 45 minutes was a good mix of working different areas and several levels were explained for different exercises which was useful. I did find my wrists were complain at times while doing the side plank type stretches (I can't remember what she called them), but I just alternated sides a bit more than she did.

The thing I struggle mostly with is trying to understand how we are supposed to be breathing.

Again as CBDB commented the sound is not as clear as it could be on the live sessions, but weirdly it was very loud for the on- demand one.

CBDB profile image
CBDBAdministratorGraduate Gold in reply todijep

Yeah, breathing is, I agree, an issue and from the limited experiences have of both Pilates and Yoga, breathing techniques can be quite different. And I do get confused because of this.

As far as I can tell, Yoga uses breathing much more consciously as for instances in a twist where breathing out allows you to relax into the twist a bit more.

Pilates quite often just suggests to breathe naturally but not to ‘use’ the breath as intentionally. (It focuses on using your core more)

But I might be wrong.

dijep profile image
dijep30D Graduate in reply toCBDB

Yes I agree with what you say about yoga and breathing.I've only previously done a few bits of Pilates previous to this and with those sessions it seemed that you moved on the outbreath and returned on the inbreath. So far yes sometimes she says just breath naturally but others she "inhale exhale" with no gap to actually breath so I was very confused ......

As long as I actually do breath I don't suppose it really matters

😂

CBDB profile image
CBDBAdministratorGraduate Gold in reply todijep

😂😂yes, do keep on breathing … 🤣🤣

dijep profile image
dijep30D Graduate

Just done my 15 minutes for day 4 and it was definitely a good one 👍👍

CBDB profile image
CBDBAdministratorGraduate Gold in reply todijep

Day 4:Yup, a small session that packs a punch 🥊 on your glutes!

These kinds of exercises I’ve done before as knee strengtheners, as many forms of pain in the knee actually stem from unevenly strong muscles in your bum area (glutes and ITBS and a third one I forgot).

So hopefully this will be really good also for knees. But my glutes felt it afterwards!

Day 5: Wow, how fast did the first 5 days go by! !!! Well, to be fair, I missed out on day 2 🤣🤣🤣and still have to catch up on that one! 📓 (Day of my long run!)🥵

But I really liked the more relaxed pace of this Progression in Pilates! It also allows me to still squeeze in my Yoga, but for rowing there is just not enough hours in the day. (But secretly… <whispering> … I’m ok with that. )😏

I love the different types of stretches, ones we don’t usually do with YWA and often focussing on the back. Today was really good that way, although I do miss the production value that YWA brings. Specifically the endings feel always quite abrupt.

But I’m not complaining, I am enjoying myself! I do actually want to tell her how much I’m enjoying, but unless I join a live class, I don’t think there is a way. 🤔 👍🏽😃

Thumbs up for me!

(I’ll drop the mat for the next few days just after posting this!)

dijep profile image
dijep30D Graduate in reply toCBDB

I agree with you about the stretches. There were some good ones today and it was a nice variety of exercises as well.I'm finding each day's session an interesting mix and it's fun wondering what we'll be getting from the next one. 👍

Hi, just checking in, I’m all better now and went for a longer than usual run so we both did day one Pilates, I’m still on the fence but will carry on for a while and see how it goes mHows everyone else enjoying them?

CBDB profile image
CBDBAdministratorGraduate Gold in reply toSueAppleRun

I find them actually a bit easier than some YWA. My hubby likes them more. But they do work your core!

SueAppleRun profile image
SueAppleRun in reply toCBDB

Didn’t notice core but did notice legs a bit achy, I want to carry on as long as we can but back to work tomorrow
