My first live Zoom’d Yoga session

Ok, I know I know …. I’m late to the game and many of our Strength and Flexers have had regular live Zoom’d Yoga and Pilates sessions, but today was my first!

And boy, was it scary!

There was an offer as part of the Nike Training App that I am trialing, but so many thing went wrong on my end!

I’m quite nifty with Zoom and MS Teams and Jitsi and all sorts of other video conferencing software, but I’ve done it all on a PC computer in my work office (or rather the bedroom that we turned into my office on lockdown) .

So setting it up in my old iPad was probably something I shouldn’t have left to the last 10 minutes! 🤦🏻‍♀️

But I did, and so then, after managing to choose something appropriate and presentable to wear, I had to see where to lean the iPad, how I could show the whole mat, and wether it was enough time to test the hookup to the TV (yes, it was too late so I had to do it all on the ipad).

Then as I logged on, I couldn’t see anyone else and it looked like I might be the only Yogi,- and that meant me BIG on the screen! 😳😳 But I could see the chat, but on the iPad you either see the chat or the screen! Panic! Was I missing something?

The session was only 30 min but I had to fiddle with the chat as someone had said Hi CBDB. Fiddling upset the angle and the sound was so quiet, that I had to take the iPad closer to the mat, which meant I could forget about putting the camera on!

Also once my son had blurted into my livingroom yoga space, I had to turn the mic off as well! All evenings he normally is not to be seen, but just this evening does he come down and is desperate to tell us something!!🤫🙄

Ok, so with camera and mike off I felt like the first year school girl hiding in the last row. But I promised myself to sort the tech setup to be much more ready next time! (And to hook it up to the TV for better pic and volume!)

But other than that, it was a really nice stretchy practice, a comfortable one, and thanks to YWA everything was nicely familiar to me, and only some nuanced twists were new and really nice to try.

But gosh, the tech was something.

So Yogis/Pilatis , how do you manage your tech setup for live sessions? I think I need to learn the ropes from more experienced ‘livers’ for live Zoom’d yoga!!!

You’ve probably saved yourself some grey hairs, there. I think I’ve got a few more due to the panic around the tech set-up! 🤣😉

I have nothing to contribute as I have never tried a love yoga class, but well done - sounds like yours was a bit stressful! xxx

I did a yoga for cyclists course last winter. That was on zoom, I set up the laptop on a little coffee table in the bedroom (just space for a mat and threw all the dirty clothes and clutter on the bed out of sight). We all had mics on for a short discussion at the start of the class. During the class it was mics off and cameras optional, but encouraged, so the teacher could see if her instructions were being comprehended.

I did set up my space and tech a little while before the class and then do something else while waiting for the start.

I do my jazzercise class, which is live streamed, on my phone. I play the sound through our hifi or Bluetooth headphones. My phone just seems to connect more reliably.

I think if the verbal instructions are good, there shouldn't be any need to have a big picture. After all at an in-person class you wouldn't be craning your neck the whole time to see the instructor.

Ah, so useful to read. Thank you! I think your sessions sound more organised at both ends than mine! 🤣🤣
