Hi I too have CREST with telangiectasia On my face lips inside my mouth and some on the tip of my tongue but my Rheumatologist is not conserved with them at the moment I have a lot on my mouth etc and some on my hands too . It would be interesting to know what specialist says about yours. I have never seen an oral consultant about mine.
Hi there, I am the same, I have telangi everywhere, and lots on my lips and inside my mouth. The bigger ones can be an issue if they get caught with your toothbrush! I often end up with a bleed when cleaning my teeth. But, they are not inherently a problem. If your dentist has not got any experience with the condition then he is just worrying that they are something else and wanting a second opinion. For example, he might be wanting to ensure that it is not a change in the mouth that is related to an oral cancer. At least he is checking!
However, there is also a condition which is called Hereditary haemorrhagic telangiectasia (HHT), which is an inherited genetic disorder that affects the blood vessels. It's also known as Osler-Weber-Rendu syndrome.
People with HHT have some blood vessels that have not developed properly and sometimes cause bleeding, known as arteriovenous malformations (AVMs). These are often found in the lungs and brain and if they bleed it is a source of real concern. If someone has this condition it needs investigation, and from the perspective of a dentist then any procedures need antibiotic cover. These people will often have telangis, just like someone with scleroderma, but of course they will not have all the other problems that people with scleroderma have.
Not sure if this will help you! I was unaware I actually had one on my tongue until one day when I was eating my lunch. I suddenly tasted blood in my mouth and was quite frightened when I looked in the mirror at what I saw. There appeared to be an inordinate amount of blood oozing from the middle of my tongue. Eventually it eased and I contacted my specialist nurse who confirmed that it was more than likely a burst telangi and not to worry if it had stopped bleeding out. It has never happened since to any of my others which I have on various parts of my body. Kim x
Thank you so much for your reply as well. So sorry to hear you had that frightening experience. I am glad that your specialist nurse was able to reassure you.
