So cold!

Hi, have Sys. Sclerosis ...I am not having a good time just now....or for quite a while.... I am feeling cold all the time. It is strange because it seems to be from my 'core' like I am not generating heat to warm my body, if that makes any sense! I have had a quilt around me on the livingroom couch and hubby tells me it is warm in the room when I say how cold I am feeling. I have been told I have severe anaemia and am on iron tablets and have undergone a CT.colonoscopy test then an endoscopy test to see where I am losing blood...both were clear. So, does this cause this loss of heat in me? or is there an underlying infection? Yes, I could go to the doctor but am afraid of another invasive procedure as am sick of the hospital visits.

You have described how I feel exactly. Yesterday I climbed into bed clothes slippers and all and just left the blanket on high for half an hour. I just couldn't warm up. The shoulder seasons are the worst and others have said the same.

I assumed it's the Raynauds making me cold in the very core of my body. It very unpleasant and I sympathizeh

Hi Marilyn

Sorry to hear that you're suffering currently..change of seasons always tricky for me too so completely know where you're coming from.

I find the best way for me to warm up is my much loved hot water bottle..I should say bottles because I've got two now..the good thing I find with them is that they warm up wherever u put them..so I move it accordingly..cuddling it warms my inner core..but if it's my feet that r cold I just rest them on the hottie for a while 🔥🔥warms them up a treat!! I've got one with a soft fluffy cover on so it feels great when my hands r cold n sore too!!

Another idea is to wear a couple of layers of clothing..u can wear up to four..say something like a vest top with a tea shirt n then a light fleecy top..something like that..if u get too hot u can just peel the layers off as needed!!

Bless ya heart 💜 I'm always asking my hubby 'is it cold in here?? R u feeling cold??etc'

Food is good for warming me up as well..plenty of black pepper..ginger tea helps..n hearty soups with lots of herbs!!

Trust me on the hot water bottle though..treat yourself.. it'll be money well spent!! Xx

Someone told me the kidneys have influence over the body’s thermostat. Suggested I try Pappy’s Sassafras Tea concentrate. It’s bottled and sold in Kroger’s grocery store (USA). They warned against purchasing the bark from holistic shops. I use two TBSP of the liquid concentrate in a cup of hot water to drank one cup a day for five days only, no longer per month. No sugar. It actually tastes similar to root beer soda. This flushes my kidneys and along with my RX amlodipine, I no longer, except for winter months, have to carry my gloves and socks out. I must admit that I do still enjoy my space heater intermittently😍 but I can function without. Hope any of this helps

Good morning marilynmcl. I know just how you feel. I had exactly the same thing last summer where hospital said I was anaemic. I was put on iron pills and my blood didn't change. I was put on iron liquid stuff (just awful) but that didn't improve my blood. Then they decided that my body wasn't absorbing iron from food or pills or liquid medicine. I then had to visit the hospital for one full day for two week i.e. two visits over two weeks and have iron intravenously. That seemed to fix things and I eventually I felt a lot better. I know what you mean about being cold to the core - I never eat ice cream or anything really cold as I can feel the cold inside me for hours. I was scared about the iron drip which took a few hours but it was all OK and not as horrible as I thought. Maybe you should ask the question of your doctor about your body absorbing iron. Good luck and hope you feel better soon.

Have had another blood test today for iron so if am still deficient then 'other solutions' will be looked into I was told by Dr. Cram.....never met this doc. but was responsible for all the invasive tests this month! so, am on the couch just now with a hot water bottle and a quilt but still frozen! Booooooo!

I've been freezing today too. Had trouble doing my purse etc to pay at the cash out in Sainsbury's this morning my hands were too cold and I had to blast the heater in the car on the way home. Time for jumpers gloves and scarf for me. Seems like I only wear summer clothes for a very short time each year. Keep warm and I hope the medical people will be able to help you.

Anaemia does cause extreme coldness, and this won't be helped when you have raynauds. Winter is a dreaded time for those with scleroderma and raynauds. I constantly have a hot water bottle!

Yes I've put on the central heating as well as having several layers of clothing, mittens and a hottie!

I have had to put on heating as well. My fella is still in shorts and t shirts indoors and sleeping on top of the covers but I have been miserably cold for a couple of weeks. In the end I said I must have extra heating and am now feeling a bit better.

It's best not to get cold if this can be avoided. It takes so long to get warm again. Hot food helps. Again it causes issues when your partner just wants salad and you are freezing inside and need hot food. Supermarket fridge aisles bring problems when out shopping.

These things are all part of daily living for us. Great isn't it.

Yes it is...after shopping in Morrisons it takes me the rest of the day to warm back up! I really need to go in there with lots of layers of clothing on and a good heavy winter coat!

It may sound drastic to some but for a good time now I have thought that separate sleeping arrangements might suit me better. I need to be warm as toast and he flings the covers off. I need a full tog duvet and he would probably still manage with just a sheet.

I haven't said anything but have thought often about 2 singles pushed together, with our own bedding. That way we could both sleep at a temperature that suits. 😀

Got the same husband methinks! Mine is exactly the same...he is always toasty warm and I am the opposite ...I had to remove my down duvet and just put a cotton topsheet...cotton cellular blanket then on top a wool blanket just to accomodate my beloved.....it does work but when winter hits I think I would need to put another wool blanket on!

I have got a foot warmer. I sit with my feet in that and a blanket over the top up to my waist. It seems to warm me all over. It warms up very quickly and once warm can be turned to its lowest setting or even off and still stays warm. I wouldn't be without it in the winter.

And if you see someone looking as if they are about to rob a bank wearing a pink balaclava it's me. I find it very good when I need to go out in the winter and means I'm not breathing in cold air. It can be quite a talking point as well, a chance to educate people and eveyone is very supportive. Haven't heard any youngsters laughing at me, but maybe they do!

Hi there i empathise with you, i'm already feeling cold to my core and spending time with my hands in warm water trying to get some colour and feeling back into them, and it's only September. I highly recommend the silver thread gloves you can buy from SRUK, at £20 they aren't cheap, but when i'm out at the supermarket and the numbness starts, I know if i pop these on they will help to stop my hands from going into a full Raynauds attack. They are very thin, and I can even use my phone wearing them, when I tap it responds as if I have no gloves on at all, which is a bonus! I also have an electric hottie, it takes around 15 mins to warm up and if it's really cold I take it out in the car with me for instant relief, it stays hot for around 5/6 hours, so it's a godsend in the winter. Hope you get to the root of your inner cold.

Hi Janpmat, my daughter bought me an electric hot water bottle for my hands and it is brilliant...I can use it on my feet too as they usually are frozen despite what I wear on my feet! I have recently seen a foot warmer too which I am considering .

I’m very familiar with the cold to the core sensation. I do all the usual measures for Raynaud’s, but if I have to answer the door or stand and check that my hound isn’t plunging into next doors garden, then deciding he can’t get back, I’m actually hunched over to try and keep body warmth in.

Heating’s on, of course.

marilynmcl profile image
marilynmcl in reply to Lupiknits

I empathise and sympathise Lupiknits.... my husband just has to open the porch window 'to let some air in' and leave the livingroom door open and I am absolutely shivering! He just doesn't understand as he is toasty warm....and I suppose it is just as bad for him to be roasted in a too warm house so I just get a duvet at the back of the couch that I can cover me up with when I need to.

I try to balance living alone and when I lived with my ex! He didn’t mind me warming my feet on his back in bed: got to give him a few brownie points.

My faithful hound is a better companion. A skinny sight hound, who feels the cold but seems to radiate heat. Under a duvet on the sofa warming our bones comforts each other. On a cold night he’s in the bed with me. I’ve never before allowed a dog to sleep as much as on the bed before, but it saves on heating bills 😉

We had two cocker spaniels and just one of them liked up on the bed with us unless it was REALLY cold then the other one would jump up and snuggle in under the covers....as long as they have been 'flea-ed' and are clean woofs and don't cast hair everywhere....why not? x

Well, he’s got the usual things you don’t want to share with your dog sorted, and has his teeth brushed and paws washed, but it takes a dog lover to understand sometimes 🤣

nothing better than the love of your dog....nothing!
