TEMGESIC or BUPRENORPHINE ?

Pesently taking Targin10/5 but only gives relief 4-6 hours at night.

Today my sleep specialist swapped me over to Temgesic(.2mg) assuring me it would last all night. He told me Temgesic is identical to Buprenorphine.

Some members on this forum say that it only has a half life of 4-6 hours!( similar to Targin for me) .

I’m confused as I thought Buprenorphine is long lasting???

I did a post on this. I did a lot of in depth research on Temgesic versus Buprenorphine and they are indeed identical with the same pharmakinetic properties. Both temgesic AND Buprenorphine have a long half life of 25 hours and release most of the active ingredient over the first 11/12 hours.

However, 0.2mg may not be enough. Most people on here are on about 0.4 - 0.8mg.

I hope it works for you. If it stops RLS, but you get breakthrough RLS in the early morning, it's a sign you need 0.4mg.

Good luck.

Thanks for that info.I feel reassured now that the Temgesic is long lasting and should help me get through the night.

Will increase dose if needed.

Picked up my Temgesic from chemist today but I’m nervous about taking it tonight.

If I take .2mg at 9pm, can I take another one if I need it in the middle of the night?( or earlier if the first one didn’t work well enough?

Info sheet states u can take it every 6-8 hours but I thought it had a long half-life and lasts for 24 hours?????

It does have a long half life. Most of the active ingredient is released in the first 12 hours. So, you can take another 0.2mg in the middle of the night. 0.4mg is still a very low dose.

And be prepared for nausea. It does seem common, especially in the first 10 days. It will pass.I used medical cannabis with 20%THC & it stopped nausea instantly. You can also use zofran or kwells.

Thanks, will take it tonight.Fingers crossed I don’t get nausea and it will be effective.Targin had become a security blanket for me so I’m very apprehensive about going off it!

Will message how I go.

It is strange because when you ask the question on line it does say 4 to 6 hours but it also says is identical to buprenorphine. My guess is that at some point one site said 4 to 6 hours and other sites picked up on that so eventually they all did.

That's what threw me off the first time I investigated Temgesic. All those online searches saying 'half life 4 -5 hours'.But when you look up pharmakinetic properties, temgesic has identical results to Buprenorphine and contains 'Buprenorphine hydrochloride'.

It was very confusing.
