ppi advice please

hi today I had to have a gastroscopy /endoscopy as they suspected ulcers due to all the ibuprofen and naproxen post hip surgery - they have prescribed me esomaprazole as they’ve found 2 peptic ulcers I remember reading proton pump inhibitors could make the RLS worse Any help please as I did discuss with consultant and he said this one would be less problematic than lansoprazole

Is this correct is there a better option as I have to take for 8 weeks

Thank you everyone in advance as I’m already in a bad RLS and BFS flare I couldn’t cope if it got worse but would like my stomach to get better

Yes, PPIs can make RLS worse and where used as a treatment for acid reflux might be replaced by OTC Gaviscon Advance (not ordinary Gaviscon!).

However PPIs are also prescribed to protect the GI tract from the effects of prolonged treatment with NSAIDs such as ibuprofen and naproxen. In that context, Gaviscon Advance is probably not appropriate. And there have indeed been some reports that esomaprazole is safer for RLS than other PPIs: I think that amrob123 takes it? (Please correct me if I've misremembered Amrob).

Thanks Chris the surgeon did seem confident it was the best one but has said I can come back and get famitidine if the esomaprazole makes me much worse

To be fair my symptoms are fairly tough at the minute so I’m just hoping for the best and the 8 week course clears up the peptic ulcers I seem to have come down with

I have a repeat gastroscopy/endoscopy in 8 weeks

Thanks for responding so quickly

You remembered correctly ChrisColumbus 😊 Although curiously, i didn't receive a notification despite being tagged..i just stumbled across your reply.

Anyhow i do take esomaprazole but only when i have a real flare up of symptoms. I haven't noticed that it aggravates RLS. I have never been on it for more than 14 days consecutively.

Of late I have been taking Gaviscon Advance (Extra Strength in Australia) as recommended by members on this forum.

I don't believe famotidine is any better than PPIs.

Thanks Amrob this is reassuring and helpful what I might do is take for 14 days monitor to see if any flares then cautiously continue I really appreciate both you and Chris responding

Thanks once again.

I have taken Omeprazole and Lansoprazole without it exacerbating my RLS.
