I'm considering asking my GP for a prescription for Champix to help me stop smoking. Does anyone know anything about this drug, whether it worsens RLS or might interfere with the action of the opiates I use to combat it?

I'd suggest you try asking for Zyban instead, bupropion.
Bupropion is known to be RLS safe.
It is also used as an antidepressant so if you're taking any other antidepressant especially an SSRI, then Zyban has to be used with caution.
I had a boss who mistakenly combined Chantix (I assume you meant this) with an antidepressant - wow - she was a mess, constant crying, depression. She went home - detoxed for 3 days. I quit smoking many years ago. My advice is to use some sort of nicotine replacement, gum, patch, etc. I used skol bandits (yeah, nasty) for one week - then constant use of toothpicks or bar straws, etc. I never looked back. And, if I could quit - anyone can! I would wake up - thank god I'm awake - where are the cigarettes!
The nicotene isn't the problem - it's the habit. I removed the patch because I needed a cigarette! My daughter was the same. The body is free of nicotene after a few days but the desire continues. Then my daughter took drugs she called Champix, and gave up with no trouble at all for three years until her husband left her, and she started again. Currently she's back on this drug and has no desire for a cigarette at all.
