The following has given me relief from restless legs

I am posting this as a sufferer but I am not a doctor or any health specialist but the following has worked for me for the last 2-months. I am a 75 year old with type 2 diabetes and have suffered with severe restless legs for 20-years, I am on 3 Ropinirole tablets a day (1 in morning and 2 at tea time) with little effect. I have now supplemented these with 2 of 1480mg Magnesium providing 444mg element Magnesium and 2 of Multivitamin tablets at the same time as the Ropinirole and I now have relief from restless legs most of the time. As I said it has worked for me and if you feel like trying it it may help you, I am hoping it carries on working as it has for the last two months. All the best

Pleased to hear that you have found relief from RLS. Banana is also a good source of magnesium. You don't say what dose of ropinirole you are taking.

I am 74yrs young and have suffered progressive RLS for 15 years. I have under lying health problems but not what you are diagnosed with.

My RLS can also trigger PLMD at night. I spend many nights listening to music in order to get off to sleep.

I was also taking ropinirole for many years . Ardartral, Requip, slow release, modified release, patch ,etc., etc., dosage upto 4mg per day. For me the augmentation symptoms were worse than RLS and PLMD were also much worse. To try help me I was prescribed Clonazepam, gabapentin and trazadone. To be honest the augmentation was hell and how I didn't take my own life is a miracle.

I had been sent to a local sleep clinic but apart from confirming that I wasn't suffering from sleep anaphia I didn't gain any benefit. Some 3years ago I was referred to a sleep clinic at a London hospital.

I was due to stay overnight, but to cut a long story short, that day I was suffering mega RLS augmentation . My suffering was videoed and I was advise that I needed to come off Ropinirole as quickly as possible. Over an 8 week period my ropinirole was reduced from 2.5mg per day and Pregabalin introduced starting at 50mg per day , I am now taking the max RLS recommended dose of 300mg per day. I am still taking 50mg of Trazadone at night. My life off of ropinirole is so much better now. RLS never leaves me but I have some control over the severity of the symptoms and I have never suffered augmentation.

I believe from what I have read on this site, that persons who do exceed the 300mg Pregabalin max recommended RLS dose, get no additional reduction in their symptoms and suffer side affects.

I have some control over the impact RLS has on me. I am able to adjust my intake of Pregabalin over a 24hr period. I might take 50mg at 10am, 100mg at 4pm and 150mg at bedtime with 50mg of trazadone. Currently I am taking the daily 300mg max at night with the trazadone. I will do this for 3/4 days and then revert back to a morning 50mg, the afternoon 100mg and the 150mg at night.

I still have periods of the night when I am unable to sleep , but often its not due to RLS. I listen to music for an hour, have a cup of tea and often eat a banana . Then able to get back to sleep.

Good luck, keep safe.

Bananas have around 1/1000th of the amount he refers to. Plus, sugar is known by many to be an RLS trigger.

Hi and it's good to hear that you're getting some relief from the magnesium.

From what you write it appears that you get symptoms during the day as you take a tablet in the morning. Also, tea time is quite early to be taking an evening dose, so I guess you get symptoms early in the evening.

I presume the tablets are 1mg each, you don't say. This is not the maximum, but it is quite high.

You also say they have little effect.

Putting all these facts together suggests you are suffering augmentation caused by the ropinirole.

Here's a link to some information about this

Magnesium does help some people especially if they have magnesium deficiency.

However the main deficiency which is a causative factor of RLS is iron deficiency. It is brain iron deficiency not anaemia.

I suggest you have blood tests for serum iron, transferrin, ferritin and haemoglobin.

If your ferritin is below 75ug/L then your RLS could be improved by taking an oral iron supplement.

Here's a link to some info about iron therapy for RLS.

Hi 2020Oggy, thanks for the info. I just have a few questions, and I apologize if you have already answered these questions and I missed your answers. My first question is what dosage of roprinolol do you take, 2nd - when you say supplemented with 2 of 1480mg magnesium providing 444mg element magnesium, can you explain that a little, I'm not sure what providing 444mg element magnesium means. 3. What multivitamin do you take. 4. Also someone else asked what time is tea time in relation to bedtime. I'm sorry, I am just a little confused and want to make sure I get it right. Thanks so much.

I take ropinorol .5mg dose per tablet. I am sorry but I only put the details that appear on the Vita Bright manufactures magnesium label so thats the only info I have and the Tesco multivitamin bottle does not give full details of what vitamins are within the tablets. Hope you get relief

I am not a doctor or health care professional. I like what you are doing. I would recommend that you do the blood tests first. I know I am low in iron and Vitamin D. So I supplement with them. I am also starting magnesium and vitamin K to help with the Vitamin D. I have been taking vitamin B for years. Oh yes, I am taking Potassium as well. All of this SEEMS to be helping. My goal is to report back in about 3 months.

Of all the stupid things, my doctor has given me a script for Testosterone. (I am turning 60 in January), my last blood test I was anemic with high ferritin. The hope is testosterone will help my anemia? I know, I don't understand it either.

I hope to have good news in about 3 months.
