I have suffered from restless legs for years and in desperation found the cure without drugs etc. You may need a partner or someone to do this for you but you can do it yourself. There is a bundle of nerves running from the lower spine, diagonally across the buttocks and into the back of the hip joint, these are irritated and cause the irritation down the legs and into the feet. Start by massaging either side of the lower spine, you will feel the irritation, then using firmer pressure, knead across the buttocks and into the back of the hip joint using knuckles or fingers. It is quite painful but persist, going back over the nerve channel time and again for at least five minutes, if not ten. Then you have peace, perfect peace! Trial and error is needed but it really does work.

Easy relief from restless legs.
Hi jules, I'm glad you have found something that helps you personally. Unfortunately restless legs is not limited to the legs alone and I, along with many others have in my arms as well. Others have it their shoulders neck and face. No doubt other people have it elsewhere as well.
Not wishing to be negative and I hope this works for you long-term.
Hi Steve, I did not have enough room to discuss restless arms etc. For arms, which I have had, follow the procedure I suggested by massaging either side of the spine in between the shoulder blades, you have to knead it quite hard, then across and out towards the arms, over and under the shoulder blades etc. You will have to have help from someone else though. As for shoulders, neck and face, which I have not had, maybe massaging the nerves leaving the neck might help. I appreciate that this method might not help everybody but its worth a try, don't you think? The procedure has to be done every time you get restless legs/arms etc. I wish you all the best. Jules.
Oh God yes, everything is worth trying lol Best wishes to you too.Steve.
Well, at least its free to try....not sure i could do it myself tho, and i havent got anyone at home to give it a go.... Glad to hear it works for you... anything like this is worth having a go at, definately nothing to loose....
Everything is worth trying, but let's not use the word cure. How about "treatment"? A cure would mean that your RLS would not come back after treatment, and I am assuming that just one massage does not stop it forever, since repeated massages are needed. So, you still have RLS, not cured, but able to control it wth the right kind of massage. I am not being negative here, either, but you have found a thing that helps you cope and treat your RLS. I have had it for 42 yrs, and have done all kinds of massages, and just like you describe also. I had a massage therapist for 6 months,. For ME, sometimes we had to stop the massages, because my RLS would kick in, and then I could not stand anything touching me. So, I am wildly happy for you and hope it continues to help you.
Everything is worth trying, as long as it is not off a web site that charges for info.
Yes, nightdancer, perhaps treatment is a better word than cure. What I meant was that each time I got RLS, kneading the muscles following the nerves from the lower spine, cured that particular bout. I have had restless legs (and occasionally arms) for over twenty years and it has never failed to get rid of it. The massaging and kneading is only effective when I actually have a bout of RLS and Iam sorry to learn that similar treatment hasn't worked for you. We are all different and I posted this information hoping it might help somebody. There is no point whatsoever in having this sort of treatment when you do not actually have an attack of RLS, it would cause severe aggravation of the nerves and do the opposite of relieving the severe irritation during a bout. I do hope that one day you find something that helps you, best of luck.Jules.
Sounds worth trying.
Thanks, Jules- I actually have had similar success massaging those areas, although they can be hard to get at. Lying on a tennis ball can work, particularly for the buttock and hip areas. And I agree that massaging the area when it's not activated only seems to make things worse -my osteopath has been advocating it, and I'm not keen. I seem to have to wait until the twitching starts in order to tackle it. I'm convinced the nerves in the lower spine are a major factor in the condition.
I've also discovered a gel that I get from the US that helps a lot. It's called "Night Time Leg Calm" from a company called Nature's Inventory (naturesinventory.com) and only contains natural ingredients. I rub it on the same areas you describe. I was very sceptical, but it helps a lot. Not 100% of the time, but often. I also use arnica cream.
My problem at the moment is that the condition has suddenly become a lot worse- from maybe 30-60 minutes once every couple of nights, to several hours every night. I'm trying to work out why this is happening and am investigating all kinds of possibilities. One thing I've discovered is that thyroid imbalance can be a factor, so I'm going to look into that, as I'm having other symptoms. I so far haven't been able to tolerate drugs like gabapentin, so can't go that route.
I agree that none of these things are cures, but finding treatments that help can be a blessing, that's for sure, so I appreciate finding this site.
I also tried the Leg Calm from Nature's Inventory but sorry to say that it did nothing for me.
Free2create, RLS can get worse for most as we get older... Suddenly, can mean other reasons, like using a anti-depressant or another med which could be making it worse.. OTC stuff can also make things worse... Have a look on this website rlshelp.org look at the treatment page, lots of stuff can make RLS worse, including food and drink..
