Iron Blood Test Results

In addition to the attached Iron Bloodwork, my 4/23/2020 Ferritin Levels: 218.

Ferritin is a little high, but all the rest are in "normal" range. My doctor says everything is fine.

Which ones are important for RLS? Are these numbers ok?

If you have RLS, then your ferritin isnt too high.

50% of RLS sufferers benefit from their ferritin being at least 100ug/L. So good news, your's is.

Not so good news, if you're still suffering, then you're one of the 50% who doesn't benefit. However, some RLS specialists are now saying it should be 300 - 400 ug/L.

In which case you might want to investigate getting it higher.

I'm not as sure about the iron and transferrin levels. hopefully someone else will asnwer that one.

How's it going with your medication?

The single most consistent finding and the strongest environmental risk factor associated with RLS is iron insufficiency.

If you have RLS, the first step is a morning fasted Full iron panel. Like above

The recommendation is to fast. I am pretty sure this is because iron rich foods can raise your ferritin. So no blood pancakes or oysters for sure. If you can get by with a small glass of juice or a piece of fruit, I doubt it would hurt. But ask your doctor. Cheers

Hello libraryannie,

"Evidence-based and consensus clinical practice guidelines for the iron treatment of restless legs syndrome/Willis-Ekbom disease in adults and children: an IRLSSG task force report"

Everyone wants to charge for it, but it is available for free here.

I am not a Doctor, I am a sufferer of RLS. I agree with Manerva, your ferritin is NOT low. When my ferritin hit 200 the nurse told me it was too high. The doctor disagreed! My last ferritin was 273 and I am NOT stopping oral iron. I did cut back to 325mg of Ferrous Sulfate once a day. (I forgot the last two days, not good).

From what I see, your Saturation Percentage is low. I do believe the recommendation is above 30% If your Saturation Percentage is under 20% the experts recommend and infusion. See the paper section 8.3.2 (that is completely from memory, I have looked at it a lot)

Just to confirm, did you do this blood test in the morning and was it fasted?
