Please anyone with restless leg try potassium citrate and vitamin B1 you’re symptoms will be gone within a few days. I had restless leg so bad I wore holes in my bottom sheet. This is safe and my belief it’s a vitamins deficiency. Worth a try

How much potassium citrate did you take per day?

Graham3196 profile image
Graham3196 in reply to Ruby12345

Hi Ruby

In a research paper quoted in this forum recently the experimenters gave the subjects the following:

" potassium citrate 1080 mg equivalent to 10 mEq potassium orally once daily"

In their experiment 100% of their 68 subjects were symptom free after 45 days.

I have been trying to contact the lead author to see if there were any follow up experiments but I haven't heard from him yet.

Sounds too good to be true but what if it applies to 25% of us!!!

Cheers

Graham

Thanks for this advice. I am trying Potassium Citrate without the Vitamin B at the moment. I'll stick with this for 50 days and if I still have symptoms then I'll add the Vita B

Are you eating whatever you like with no effects?

Cheers

Can you tell me how long you have been taking the Potassium please Graham, and is it powder form, or tablets, if so how much? I took it for a couple of days expecting some change, but rls stayed the same.

Graham3196 in reply to Gmc54

I have been on it for 7 nights so far. There is a report in this forum and in an experiment they had 68 subjects, all with restless legs

The good news "It was observed that 37 (54.4%) patients were completely relieved from RLS at the end of 15 days therapy and 20 (29.4%) patients were relieved after one month and 11 (16.1%) were completely relieved after 45 days therapy." that is all subjects were symptom free after 45 days.

Therefore I will keep taking the Pot Cit for 45 days before I think of giving up.

The stuff I am on comes in tablets marked 1.08g tablets, Brand is Urocit-K Manufactured by Mission Pharmaceutical Company, san Antonio, TX USA 78230 1355

The time to response seems to vary enormously with all out RLS treatments.

For example when I first tried Gluten free I noticed an improvement within a couple of days (it was still bad but much better) When I went on the FODMAP diet I didn't get much improvement for 12 weeks and then I was much better I added a low chem diet and it got worse for a week and then reached a very good level. On the other hand I heard of someone who tried the FODMAP diet and two nights later slept like a baby.

My hope is that the Potassium Citrate will allow me to still be very good but eating a wider range of foods. The diet works on the RLS but it can get a touch boring. Maybe after 45 days I will be drinking regular cow's milk and eating garlic and onion sandwiches on whole wheat bread. Heaven!

Cheers

Really please it’s worked for you karenfried. I’ve been on B1 & other B vitamins and potassium citrate every evening for over 18 months but they haven’t made any difference to my RLS.

However, everyone reacts differently to different drugs & supplements & I’m sure it will help someone.

Thanks for posting

You need a prescription for both in Norway. I've been mulling over the possibility though - maybe some of the health stores stock them. Anyway, good for you that something's working!

Odds are that for most people this will not work. Evidence showing effectiveness of supplements is scanty. Be sure to tell you doc if you are taking supplements as they can have their own side effects.

Last night was the first night I took the medication Pramipexole that my doctor gave me 0.50 tabs I took a half of that being scared of a new medication. I was so wired but tired did not sleep at all 😴. The potassium and B1 certainly seemed better than this medication. My doctor is aware of the vitamins I take. She said let’s give this Pramipexole a try, maybe I reacted because I’m new to it. But NO sleep 😴

I was the same when first prescribed Pramipexole after 20 years of RLS - it has however been a godsend to me some 24 months later - had to up from the original dosage some after about 6 months in but now good.

I have been on Pramipexole for many years. Did they tell you about some of the side effects of this drug? I know first hand that after a while, you will have to start increasing the amount you take because the body gets used to it. It is very addictive as well and it is pure hell trying to get off of it. It can make you want to gamble, shop too much and other mind altering effects. I would think twice before using it. I wish I had been told more about it before I took it, but I was suffering so bad with RLS that I would have tried anything.

Don't worry about the odds of success!! If there is a 10% chance that your RLS would be cured what would you not do???

Everyone should try the potcit (with their GPs blessing and monitoring) It would be terrific if we lost 10% of the forum members to a victory over the dreaded RLS

I don't think Potassium Citrate would be classified as a supplement, its just a chemical like vitamin C isn't it?

By the way can you let us know the source of the evidence please. It would be interesting to see what they tested and how rigorous their experimental procedures were.

Thanks

Graham

I believe there is a relationship between Potassium and RLS. Somehow it can dysregulate iron. I take cream of tartar for potassium (app 300mg in 1/4 tsp) along with sea salt in juice (the adrenal cocktail). You can purchase a similar product on Jigsaw Health (with 375 mg Potassium). jigsawhealth.com/root-cause...

Also this product with 1000 mg Potassium Citrate drberg.com/blog/potassium-i...

Yes I’ve heard that, I hate shoving medication down me for every symptom

kelirock profile image

How very interesting DicCarlson. On my latest blood test I was low in potassium but neither myself or my doctor considered it could be due to RSL. It's certainly worth a try.

Graham3196 profile image
Graham3196 in reply to DicCarlson

I don't know that its just the potassium that does the trick It might depend on the compound in which the potassium is contained. I read of an experiment where potassium Citrate appeared to "cure" 100% of 68 people in 45 days. I would suggest we stick to exactly the same treatment in every way possible to see if it repeats itself for us.

But of course the big question is Has the cream of tarter cured your RLS? If yes then we are into another experiment. It would be more fun to find that six avocados a day would cure your RLS Problem here is that I can't eat avocados because they give me my RLS symptoms mixed with my potassium.

Iron supplementation "cured" my RLS in a week! The major symptom of legs moving, causing me to "walk the floor" all night and get no sleep at all was eliminated by the supplement ferrous bisglycinate chelate. I went from a Ferritin level of 49 to 105 in 3 months. Insomnia issues and the leg cramps remain which is why I experiment with sea salt and potassium.

Graham3196 profile image
Graham3196 in reply to DicCarlson

Thats wonderful news. Another hope for all of us that we just have to get that ferritin level up.

I am following the routine of two ferrous biglycinate tablets every second night mixed with a mouthful of chewed up vitamin C tablets on an empty stomach but my ferritin level has moved up only about 15 units in 9 months. Your body must be doing something right.

It's also interesting that you are just over the 100 which was the original target for RLS patients.

I have found that a magnesium biglycinate tablet about an hour before bed (when I remember) stops me waking up at 3am with cramps. Similarly for my wife. She woke up three nights a week with really painful cramps. She has taken two magnesium biglycinate one morning, one at night, for about a year and has only had cramps on about three nights and one of those was when she forgot her night time tablet. Go magnesium!!!

Cheers

Another piece of the puzzle for me is that Magnesium elicits a paradoxical reaction - excitable rather than relaxing. Even taken in the morning - it contributes to my insomnia, and I have taken literally every different formula. However, I have taken some electrolyte formulas w/Mg and they seem fine.

Graham3196 profile image
Graham3196 in reply to DicCarlson

I started taking Magnesium dioxide(i think) and it triggered RLS symptoms so I stopped Later I learned there are diiferent mg products used in supplements.

I changed to Mg biglycinate and it doesn't upset my RLS AND it fixes my cramps.

My wifes specialist saus magnesium Oxolate might be better but we don't want to adjust something that's working (and I can't find a supplier)

Cheers

I'm confused. Are u taking both pramipexol and the potassium/B1 cocktail or just the cocktail? And how much of each? Thanks.

Glad it works for you. I have been taking both for over a year and it has not done anything for me as far as RLS is concerned. It has helped with cramping but my çramping is not related to RLS

DicCarlson profile image
DicCarlson in reply to Whippetmama

You know I'm beginning to believe that the cramping (I suffer from that also) and RLS are not related DIRECTLY, but they could both be caused by low potassium. The RLS via some sort of dysregulation of iron CAUSED by the potassium deficiency. I am just guessing but my severe RLS was preceded by epic leg cramps - then the RLS set in.

V-8 has 900 to 1000 mg of potassium in an 8 ounce glass. Don't know if you have V-8 over there in Britain.

First, should have blood tests done, to make sure the potassium is ok to take. One thing does not work for everyone. I have tried the supplement route for 30 yrs. Potassium did nothing for me, and I take B12 daily. Hope it keeps working for you. That is why this disease is so difficult to treat, no one thing will work, it is all trial and error. Good luck!
