A bit of history. Dr. Carolyn Dean was stripped of her license in several states, but that is beside the point about RLS. She wrote a couple of columns about 7 6 years ago, saying "RLS is not real, it is all in your head, and if you get your lazy a**es out of your recliners you would not be restless". her exact words! My groups went after her, she took the stuff down. NOW she says she believes in RLS, because she is trying to sell her book and cash in on her magnesium products to sell. She is NOT nice, She thinks magnesium cures everything, and she NEVER believed in RLS until she found out she could make money off of it. I have spent years investigating her, and I have all the court papers and files about her license being stripped in the US in CA, NY and lots of others. So, I guess my point is, while some people DO use magnesium, and might help SOME people, this is not the person to get advice from. She was busted for diagnosing patients with other things like Candida, charging patients for the tests that she NEVER ran at 200 bucks a pop. Just seeing her name makes me go nutty. I would NEVER give her a dime. quackwatch.org

Hi nightdancer - wish I'd known this before I persuaded my wife to buy two of Dr. Carolyn Dean's products for her RLS - ReMag Magnesium Liquid Solution

and ReMyte Mineral Solution - at a total cost of £87. They were a complete waste of money - no improvement in my wife's RLS.

hmmmmmm, yes, better to ask around first. Sorry you wasted your money on her crap. Because that what it is, crap. She is ONLY interested in $$$$$$$$

in reply tonightdancer

Interesting to hear. Her book(s) are very much promoted in the US. I've never bought or read them. Magnesium is a necessary mineral for many things but I have found a lot of good research that transcends Dr Dean's. I read a few book reviews (amazon, etc, ) and it seemed to me she doesn't add anything new to the mix just rewrites what is already known and established. I pay attention to my magnesium chiefly for my afib. Also, I don't really trust sources of info when hard sell products are also involved. That's just me.

Thanks for posting Peter. I know a lot of people on here with RLS say it has helped them but sadly it does not work for everyone.

I've had great success with taking magnesium it cured my chronic fatigue in three days, and also my restless legs syndrome.

What form/brand of Mg do you use for rls?

flfair profile image

I take Doctors Best magnesium caps and magnesium flakes in the bath and mag oil on the legs.

She is selling magnesium- without telling us what sort??.

I'm suspicious before I started- then read nightdancer- ok - now I'm happy my instincts were confirmed.

Magnesium does work for some. And also can be administered orally and transdermally.

My instincts said the same. A quick internet search (Casewatch) reveals the background.

I've been taking a high-dose magnesium supplement for a couple years, but not for RLS. It hasn't helped me with RLS. I take ropinerol, 2 mg. at night

Have you tried magnesium oil on your legs.

No. Topical supplements don't seem to work well. Also, I think my RLS is a self-fulfilling prophecy. It's mental. I don't know why it started initially, but sleeping pills, wine, nothing like that helped. I talked with my doc and she put me on ropinerol. Now, I expect to have RLS at night and so I do. I take the ropinerol and then I don't. A placebo might have the same result, if I think it's ropinerol.

RSL can be diagnosed by a neurologist who will put you through a series of painless tests. The belief 'it's all in your mind' was common years ago but the syndrome is a real one and if you are experiencing the symptoms at night it might be because your are not as active as you had been during the day. You could try a placebo and see what happens, outcome would be interesting.

Yes, but if I knew it was a placebo, it wouldn't work. Would have to be a blind test that I think is ropinerol. I know RLS is a real syndrome, I'm suggesting that if I believed it was ropinerol and it was a placebo, then I'd surmise that much of my RLS is mindful.

I've had significant spine surgery, fused from lumbar to cervical, so I'm thinking that may have something to do with my RLS. I do think the mind plays a role, too, particularly if it's chronic, which it is.

Ropinerol is a very effective medication for rls- but has the typical limitations of a Dopamine Agonist - augmentation.

"More money than sense" is a comment often made in my part of the world.😢

That's a bit unfair - when you are desperate, you will try anything. It's not a case of having more money than sense.

You're right- I'm sorry. I shouldn't make smart ill judged comments. Apologies.

RLS IS neurological, so technically, it is in our brains. The spine is the dopamine transport system, in the spinal fluid. a lot of people seem to connect the RLS with their spines. I broke my back when I was 14, 5 back surgeries ans 3 neck surgeries, and I think that has all exacerbated it over the years.

IF it sounds to good to be true, as in "Dr" Carolyn Dean's web site, it is too good to be true. And she is the LAST person I would deal with, obviously from her history. She now works with the self titled "Health Ranger" where fake doctors go to "hide". :) She was going to build a spa in Costa Rica, but that fell through, they did not want her either.

I just looked at that link and thought it sounded interesting, although she was going on about magnesium a little bit too much. Then I clicked on the re-mag link and saw she was flogging it and the penny fully dropped. For a short while I thought it might be something hopeful. There are always people who, sadly, will rip anyone off. Having read all the posts above, thank God we have this community to look out for each other 🙂.

Well another update from me - I am still 98% twitch free on migraine stop. After nearly 60 years of increasingly agonising evenings and nights I am virtually symptom free. That said I'm coming to the conclusion that RLS is a very complex issue with many triggers and roots so there is no 'one size fits all' treatment. For myself I remain thankful and eternally grateful to this site for guiding me to the magnesium possibility and I hope to continue contributing to the discussion and supporting and empathising with those for whom it isn't the answer.
