PLMD ?

Hi everyone,

My Rls has been much better in the evening but now I can't sleep at night because my leg, first my right and then my left, start jerking up from the bed and sometimes my whole body jerks, I don't know if this is RLS or PLMD but whichever it is, its making me exhausted. I stopped pramipexole about a year ago because of augmentation but I can't stand this any longer so need to go back to the GP. Has anyone any suggestions regarding the best medication or any non medical treatments. I also take a small dose of Citalopram which I know aggravates it. Is there any anti depressant which doesn't aggravate rls/plmd?

Thanks for your help.

Trazadone and Wellbutrin are safe for RLS. Wellbutrinisn't available in the UK though. I tried Trazadone but the high dose needed for antidepressant treatment just made me feel drunk! I now take Mirtazapine which I am ok with but it does worsen RLS for some people so unfortunately there's not much choice 😐 x

Hello!

It could be that you have both RLS and PLMD. I think 70% (can someone please check me on this ?) have both. RLS is conscious movements and is diagnosed through verbal accounts; PLMD is unconcious movements and is diagnosed by polysomnography (in-lab sleep study).

I believe it is up to 90% Jess. Most of us. But if we have no access to a Sleep Laboratory we may never know if we are one of them.

Hi gobojo,

Are you on any meds other than citalopram?

I think the first thing you need to do is get off the citalopram.

The leg jerks sound like RLS to me. If you’re asleep, the RLS wakes you by causing leg jerks (because you’re not moving about). PLMD doesn’t usually wake you- but it makes you feel tired next dsy because of all the movements during sleep.

I think you’ll need meds like pregabalin,Gabapentin or an opioid to settle the RLS as it sounds quite severe if it’s happening every night.

Read everything you can on here about pregabalin and opioids and take the info to your GP.

Good luck
