Good morning and welcome to our Weekend Chat π¬
We all know smoking is bad for our health but do we know about the effects it has on our planet?
This makes interesting reading and even more good reasons to stay smoke freeβ¦β¦β¦
When you buy tobacco, you are financially supporting an industry that exploits farmers and children. Tobacco growers are exposed to ill health that is absorbed through the skin, as well as exposure to heavy pesticides and tobacco dust. In some countries children are employed in tobacco farming, which impacts not only their health but also their ability to attend school. Tobacco use can worsen poverty since tobacco users are at much higher risk of falling ill. The vast majority employed in the overall tobacco sector earn very little, while the big tobacco companies reap enormous profits.
Tobacco smoke contains three kinds of greenhouse gases!
For every 300 cigarettes produced, 1 tree is required to cure the tobacco leaf!
With 6 trillion cigarettes manufactured annually, I wonβt even attempt to do the maths there but deforestation has so many serious environmental consequences!
Cigarette butts are among the most commonly discarded waste globally and are the most frequent item of litter worldwide!
When I read this article it really opened my eyes on a whole new level.
When quitting smoking we obviously focus on how itβs affecting us individually but I hope reading these astonishing facts, itβll remind us that we really are doing the best thing for our health and for our planet as well. So stay strong and keep goingππͺ
