After the coldest week weโve had for a long time, I hope youโre all doing well with your quits. If youโve had a slip, or are having a hard time with those cravings, then Iโd like to talk about the traffic light system to help.
Most of us get cravings and this is a normal part of quitting. When youโre tempted to light up, Iโd like you to STOP ๐ and THINK before you act on them.
STOP and identify HOW you are feeling? and WHY ? Then calm down using a coping method like slow deep breathing ๐ฎโ๐จ
THINK what is the size of the problem and does my reaction match? Is this IN or OUT of my control and how can I solve this ?
Will I feel any better if I smoke? and we all know the answer to that is NO. Will smoking solve this problem? and unfortunately we all know the answer to that is NO as well.
This is the time to turn your attention away from the cravings as by stopping and thinking, it delays immediate reaction. That gut instinct to grab a cigarette has been delayed and you are in a better position to see that it would be a mistake. So what Iโm saying is donโt act on impulse as the craving will pass. Youโve bought yourself time and thatโs so important.
I found running up and down stairs a few times in angry mode helped buy that time and thatโs what I needed.
Iโm not asking you to run up and down stairs but I am asking you to STOP ๐ and THINK ๐ค as this traffic light system can help before you act. ๐ด๐ก๐ข
Our quits are hard earned and we have to fight to keep them. Itโs truly worth fighting for your freedom so keep up the good work and if you do slip up, get straight back in the ring and go again๐ช
