I’m new here and I have to quit smoking for my health

Hi everyone, I’ve smoked for over 40 years, I gave up a few years ago from September to December, I used an e-cigarette and I was fine, when hubby went out for a smoke I’d go too just to smell the fresh smoke because I loved that smell...on Christmas Day, after a lovely dinner I said I was going to “treat myself” and have one cigarette, just the one because I’m doing so well.......the rest is history!!I’ve recently had a nasty chest infection followed by quite nasty shortness of breath, my GP and A and E think the chest infection has “nudged” underlying (and unknown) COPD to wake up. I have a spirometry test 22nd January to confirm or hopefully not confirm. However I have already been referred to the respiratory team at the local hospital

Just the mention of COPD has absolutely scared me to pieces, I cried, I came home, I plugged my e-cigarette in to charge.....then I lit up!! I clearly need more help this time and it has to be for life (NOPE), I have a stop smoking appointment on 8th January and I’m thinking of trying Champix probably along with my e-cigarette.

I want to stop, I want to see my great grandchildren born....but....I’m so so scared.

Is this normal?

I’m sorry my post is long

Hello Iwannaquit, and welcome to Quit Support. If we are all honest the majority of smokers end up with copd. also have copd, but its at the early stage at the moment.

Please try not to think of it as a death sentence , as with an active life style and healthy diet you will be able to slow down the copd. Its not curable but you can live with it. By stopping smoking you will be giving yourself the best start to being smoke-free and not making your chest etc worse.

Its a good idea trying the champix and having the vape for back up .

Please let us know when you start your quit and we can assign you your badge( next to your name). Meanwhile try and read up what to expect and what might help you, by looking through the pinned posts, These are to the right or the bottom of this page.

Looking forward to supporting you. :) XXXX

Thank you for your support, my plan is to stop any progression of the COPD if I do have it, I am very active, I go to the gym 3 or 4 times a week and workout at home twice a week, never in a million years did I think I’d be doing any of those things! and I’ve lost 8.5 stone in the past 20 months, so this is the final hurdle in turning my life around x

Hi iwannaquit, welcome to quit support. I'm afraid i can't help you about using Champix and e--cigs. I suggest you ask at your stop smoking appointment.

e-cigs are definitely better than lighting up(in the UK).

I suggest you keep coming here and reading all you can find. Keep this site close ,we will support you all the way.

Good luck with your quit.🍀🚭xx

Three to four months is the tough part. The addiction starts waning and your mind tells you that you can control cigarette use.

Nearly broke myself at that point but kept going and now I can't see any circumstances where I'd light up again.

Sorry to hear that you may have a tobacco related health condition. That's something that could happen to any of us here - just remember that most smoking related conditions progress will normally be slowed by quitting smoking and the risk of additional conditions also decreases. Plus the other benefits such as improved finances, fitness level, not smelling and so on.

Merry Christmas and a hopefully smoke free new year.

Hi iwannaquit, you can do anything you want. Do you like to go to the park? I love to walk and am now addicted to that. Stay strong and find other avenues then smoking. Good luck.
