We have all been where you are, and we know that this quitting malarkey ain't easy. Between us we have had every withdrawal symptom going, we have all used different types of NRT and had our fair share of success and failure ๐ There is a wealth of information on the site so have a mosey about๐
Good luck with your quit and we say NOPE.... Not One Puff Ever ๐๐ญ๐ญ๐ญ๐ญ๐ญ๐ญ๐๐๐๐๐๐
Hi boot and welcome to our quit family๐

We say NOPE not one puff ever๐ญ๐ญ ย good luck๐๐
Hey boot, this is Shortbreath, I'm 61 years old, started smoking when I in listed in the US Navy in 1972 and was,I would say, a heavy smoker, 2 packs a day for 42 years, I quit 12 months ago, and no it wasn't easy, fact is, it was one of the hardest achievements I have ever encountered, but you know what, I did it, so I have faith you'll stay strong and keep them damn things behind you.
You'll feel better not only in health, but in yourself. Do it for good, before it's too late, as it is for me. Sure wish I had quit before the cigarettes did severe lung damage to me. I've had COPD for 8 years now, and each day gets worse, I'm close to meeting my maker.
God bless you and I pray he will put his hands on you to guide and comfort you through your battle, Stay Strong...
ShortBreath--I just wanted to say Im so sorry this happened to you--xx MmeT
My own fault, self inflicted, ย but back in the day before we knew cigarettes were bad for you, dahhh, and after it became an addiction, I should have quit when the general surgeon warrant the public back in the early eighties.
Thankyou for your kind words.ย
HB,Please don't blame yourself--Nicotine is one of the most addictive substances known to man--I never believed all the warnings--because they did such a good job brainwashing us in the 50s and 60s--You know when you are hooked you live in denial--It is natural--Im sure things are tough enough for you without self blame--Forgive yourself and do the best you can to preserve you rhealth--You don't deserve COPD--if it was the case Id have it too--Write anytime--xxx MmeT
Love your reply ย shortbreathโค๏ธ๐จ๐ฆ ย I'm so sorry for your Suffering... You will be well looked after on the other side .. I can tell... I know you're strong and my prayers are with you xxxxxx
Hey Arizonasands, thank you for the flowers (kind words,)
I have set a date for 22 April. Thank you all for your comments. Does the board feel that I should switch to electronic cigarettes, take one of the number of drugs on the market or just go for "cold Turkey"???. I am currently on a fitness kick and have lost 50lbs since Christmas. This has given me a great deal of confidence and my planned date to quit is geared to that. I feel I have to set myself a target for the date in question I will have succeeded in meeting my weight loss goal and it just seems to me that my confidence on that date will be sky high.
Hey Boot, i would recommend taking the NRT and not using electronic cigarettes. I felt that because i had broken the habit of going out for a cigarette etc, (which you wont break if you still sucking on an electric ciggie) it was harder the first few days but then the habit is broken, if you see what i mean. However this is only my opinion, and different things work differently for different people, so go with whatever you find easiest xxย
JessRudd. ColdTurkey it is.Thanks
Hey bootNB--my quit was unconventional--I did a gradual weaning--till I was down to like 2 a day--then onto an e-cig--just when I was goin nutz---Since you are quitting the 22nd of April you don't have time for a slow weaning--For me the e-cig was the ticket--but just in emergencies and if you are totally serious about your quit you wont use it for nothing but that--I could never get hooked on an e--Don't have that nice nasty filthy heavy feeling in lungs I so loved--You have a lot of choices--Read some posts--do some research and the 22nd blast off--Good luck--and Welcome--Glad to have you--MmeT
Hi and welcome to our quit. I would strongly recommend going cold turkey. You are addicted to nicotine and electric cigarettes continue to provide you with it. So if you chose to use it you are prolonging the agony. I used electric cigarettes in work only when i was smoking but I always wanted a "real" cigarette after a few hours. I have some friends who decided to go down the electric route half of them are still on them and the others are back on cigs. I guess there is no one size fits all but if you buy the Allen Carr book he explains that it is nicotine that is the evil one. Best of luck.
Thanks for that. The evidence would suggest that cold turkey is the way to go.
Definitely recommend the Allen Carr book! I have a PDF copy that i can send if you would like, just let me know your email address ย
Hi, Cold Tukey can work but in the UK, I would contact the NHS stop smoking service in your area - even if you don't want the nictine patches, tablet or other meds.
They really give advice and support that works. Most have a telephone support service like I have used and offer very flexible help. They have made the difference for me. After many attempts on my own I have now been quit 2 1/2 months and feeling amazing! I would have not made it through the first few weeks without them and this group.
My advice--Don't smoke--Take one day at a time--Stay close to site--xx MmeT
Cold turkey is tough at the start - and it's not for everyone..NRT are there for a reason..it really is up to each individual to think about what is best for them. It can depend on things happening in your personal life, your own inner strength etc etc.. The bottom line is...there is no right or wrong way ๐๐
Plan well ..write down your reasons - use these as your reminder if going through a tough time..
I quit cold turkey after 40 years of 30 a day...share dermination and the wonderful support from the members here is what go me through...BELIEVE in your ability to quitย
All the very best of luck..๐๐๐
Welcome ๐
Write your reason down why you need to quit... I remind myself all the time and I just don't take that one puff๐ท๐ท๐ญ๐ญ ย over the last 6 months on this site I have grown close to members who are suffering COPD and cancer etc and they really inspire me to not light up.
Best wishes from ๐จ๐ฆ
Well it has taken 5 years of failure after failure, but I have finally done it(: and on cold turkey, no vapes or pills. I woke up 10 months ago and realized I was slowly killing myself and just stopped. I have carried a calculation around with me in a notebook and added ยฃ14 a day which I spent on cigarettes. So far I have saved ยฃ4,200. Never say Die(:
Congratulations bootneckboy!๐๐ ๐๐๐ ๐๐๐ ๐
You got there in the end โบ๏ธ
