No fibrosis whoohoo! Never thought I would be so glad to be told I had emphysema not fibrosis. It feels like I have been given my life back

Those of you who know me will know that I have been waiting to have my appointment at the Royal Brompton. Well that was today and I never thought I would be grateful for a diagnosis of emphysema. I have been living with the spectre of fibrosis and a prognosis of 2-5 years survival. The consultant didn't know how the radiologist saw fibrosis? I have to go back but if anyone wants a reason to give up.......good luck to all you quitters!

Hi Rozi, glad you've got a diagnosis that you prefer. I bet you're so pleased that you managed to quit and stay off the fags. Was the consultant impressed with you for that? I hope you can manage the emphysema "comfortably". Let us all know how you get on. Hugs, Andi xx :)

Thanks Andi. Yes I am pleased I quit and I shall not be going back there again for any reason. At the moment I don't feel like the emphysema is too much of a problem and the consultant says that if I stay off the fags it will stabilise. Much more preferable than a progressive disease that is likely to kill you after a few years! I am going to enjoy life, and make the best of every minute!

Hey Rozi, only just reading this now sorry. Really am pleased that you feel so relieved at your results :-)

I think it's really important to highlight that you have still had such a lucky escape by choosing not to smoke as emphysema is such a debilitating disease if it is left to progress. As your consultant has already said, this will now stabilise and by stopping smoking you will most definitely stop the disease from progressing.

It sounds as though you have made the right choice and most definitely at the right time, you will now be able to enjoy many more celebrations ahead too :-)

Remember, stopping smoking is the single most important thing that you can do for your health. I bet your consultant was well chuffed with you :-)

Thanks Emjay

So true, emphysema is bad enough and if I had kept on smoking I would have, without any doubt, got much worse. Emphysema is not reversible so the damage would have caused real problems. There are some people out there that have it really severely and will die of it. If anyone wants to look on the British Lung Foundation community they can quickly gather the misery COPD causes. I am very lucky that I decided to quit and that I don't have fibrosis or cancer. It's a scary prospect....
