Today was my spouse’s 5 th external beam treatment. It took 3 try’s before his bowel and gas issues were resolved. He drinks Miralax 2x a day Takes about 10 senna tablets, smooth move tea before bed. He doesn’t eat huge meals. Then gas ex in the morning. The people at the hospital are very patient and understanding but he feels badly and I know tomorrow this will be the biggest thing on his mind.

He does take 5/325 Percocet for back pain twice a day which doesn’t help. Have any of you used suppositories or any thing more aggressive to prep with?

Thanks so much!

I do not know. I had 34 session of EBR with ZERO problems. Now I did have some constipation from the RP and my GP has me taking a 250 mg Stool Softener pill each morning along with my high fiber cereal. Seems to have gotten me straightened out. I was having A LOT of problems getting all bound up for awhile. How much water are they having him drink just before his EBR. That is critical in protecting the bowel from radiation. Yes. Pain meds can be constipating. I had that problem after my RP. Wishing you guys luck. Wish I had some suggestions.

He should not be taking laxatives or fiber prior to radiation treatments. They distend the bowels and encourage gas and bowel motility, making the radiation more toxic.
