A value sketch (light versus dark) for a painting I would like to try. How to avoid getting sucked into detail? I guess it's time to put away my reference photograph and splash around with paint.

Picasso said that true art is never finished. You just decide to stop working on it. I like where you were going with this. Keep going. Looking forward to the end result.
