Try new food Thursday - Philly Cheesesteaks

Hi everyone, I hope you are having a great week so far. Today I was supposed to be flying back to Philadelphia to see my parents and attend one of my best friend's weddings this weekend, but COVID has gotten in the way. All plans to see my family this year have been cancelled and it's certainly the hardest part of this pandemic for me as I miss my parents and grandparents very much. But I am thankful that they are healthy and I hope next year we will be in a better position to see them when it is safer.

In honor of Philadelphia, this week I wanted to share with you a recipe for a classic Philly cheesesteak. My husband is a big fan and often likes to try to create them at home. It's delicious, but not as good as the real thing. It's definitely a nice substitute though while we can't go visit. You could try the BBC's recipe if you're interested: bbcgoodfood.com/recipes/phi.... We like ours with onions, peppers and lots of condiments.

What is everyone else cooking or baking this week?

Hi Jerry, thank you so much for your kind words. You are very right and it's so much better to be safe and I know I will see them again when it is safe enough. Your cauliflower cheese sauce bake looks exquisite! It is perfect for a cooler, dreary day today like it is in London. I hope you have a fantastic long weekend :)

That's disappointing isn't it when you are looking forward to going to see your family and friends in America and then its all taken away from you!

Today I have had salmon with chicken and sweetcorn rice for lunch today and I am hoping to have a walk later on should the rain ease up but if I can't it's not the end of the world!

Yesterday I was up at 5.30am as I had a 9am job interview which I went away from feeling like I had given it my best which is all that matters really and had come home and did some more job hunting and relaxed as well and I have an interview tomorrow at 11.30am and then its the bank holiday.

I remember back in March when this first kicked off it was a Thursday and it appeared to me that everything went wrong that day at the same time when a trip to the Saatchi gallery was cancelled, we were sent home from a Welsh class at 7.30pm as they ended up cancelling it, a trip to Taunton was cancelled, a weekend away on May bank holiday was cancelled as well and I had felt really upset over it.

Anyway we are now looking to reschedule those things that can be rearranged for another day and will probably enjoy them more as well.

Hi Catgirl1976! Your lunch sounds delicious :) I wish you the best of luck with all of your interviews, I know you will get one of them and well done for giving it your best. Sorry to hear about all of the plans that have been cancelled. I never thought we would still be here in almost September with things still so far from 'normal.' I hope you can reschedule everything in good time :)

My view is that things won't go back to how they were before this kicked off back in March but they will be different and my friends had tried eating out in a pub and had said how they didn't like it as there was no atmosphere and it was like eating in an operating theatre!

We have managed to rebook a couple of things that we have pencilled into the diary like meeting up in chepstow a week on Saturday which we are all looking forward to and the trip to Taunton we hope to do at the start of October.

With tomorrow's interview it's for 11.30 so no 5.30am starts!

When I first heard the stories about how schools were going to close and exams getting cancelled I had thought it was a wind up as it sounded too bad to be true and like something off a horror movie but no it wasn't and that panic buying fiasco was absolutely ridiculous as well as there was no need for it!

Hi Sadie

Very hard for you not being able to see family but I'm pleased they are safe and well.

I've made brownies, no bake bars and sourdough bread today.

I really hope we have a vaccine soon so you can travel.

Hi Alicia, thank you for your kind words! Your bakes sound delicious and perfect if you have some rainy weather like we do in London. I hope you have a lovely long weekend :)

You are welcome and I really do hope you are able to see your family sooner rather than later.

Thank you, the brownies are made using sweet potatoes, raw cacao powder, maple syrup, oat flour and peanut better, I love them.

It's sunny here now in Devon but the rain was epic earlier.

Enjoy your weekend and stay safe and well.🌈☕🙏

That looks really nice and I bet it would be very tasty with a veggie hot dog in. So sorry you can't get to the wedding and meet up with your family, it must be very disappointing. Hopefully you will see them all soon enough. 😊🌷🌭

I hope you do also, the weather should be good with a bit of luck over the Bank holiday. 👍🌸

Oh Sadie, so sorry the pandemic has spoiled your trip. I hope you aren't too disappointed. It's horrible not being able to see family and friends. I think we all live in hope that next year will be better.

Of course I've heard of the famous Philly cheesesteak but never eaten it. It looks so American and sooooooo good! Even if it's not absolutely authentic the recipe looks well worth a try.

We've just downed bowls of chili with nachos, sour cream, and freshly made salsa. Also a bit naughty but very nice! 👍🙏

It's not nice is it when you really look forward to something only to have it snatched away at the last minute!

No catgirl1976, I hate that. I have a little while feeling quite low as I try to get over my disappointment!

Yes covid has changed our lives. Glad to hear you're staying positive and your parents, grandparents and friends are healthy, that philly cheesesteak sure looks good!😉
