I have PMR and have also been treated for Acoustic Neuroma by Gamma Knife surgery.The Acoustic Neuroma is no longer active but damage remains.
I presently take 10mgm Prednisone daily in one dose.
I need several dental extractions on the same side (upper jaw).
Should I expect my dentist to refer me to hospital -I have been told in the past that it will need specialist care.
I will ask on the Acoustic Neutoma site but this site is involved too.
Is the dental work quite separate to the Acoustic Neuroma?
Yes it is .However an upper tooth in the same area was filled and a little later an MRI scan of my head showed a micro haemorrhage on that side.No treatment was required .It may not have been caused by the filling .
I would ensure that the procedures are well separated. It is too much for one little body. The Acoustic Neuroma needs to be dealt with if it is growing, before it causes issues. This will be done under general anaesthetic obviously.
I am sure that a dental hospital is the appropriate place for multiple extractions. I am sorry that you are going through such a nerve wracking time - I really feel for you.
I think I haven't explained myself clearly.There is no problem with the Acoustic Neuroma (9 years since Gamma radiation surgery).My concern was microscopic haemorrhage in that area following a dental filling last year.Obviously there has been change in the area of the Acoustic nerve following radiation.
If it was disturbed during a filling may it not be further disturbed with extraction?
That, and of course, the steroids are my concern.
It’s probably me. You need a referral to a dental hospital from your dentis. The dental surgeon will advise on your Prednisalone needs for the procedure. Good luck!
I think you need at least an assessment by an experienced dental surgeon with some input from ENT. I certainly wouldn't want an office-based dentist doing it without a risk assessment.

No, we don't but the hospital,I think!!! still has a dental department .The waiting list will be long at this moment.I would be prepared to use private care if necessary.
Depends how risky it is - private tends to avoid anything at all difficult, very risk averse!!!!
I can see me wading through a few problems..Most of my problems caused by the poor dental service and I have had a dentist all the time.

I sometimes wonder.Mine don't have any emergency appt times.They just don't exist at all and it is a large practice.You just have to wait for your planned appointment anything up to a year away.

The last inlay I got was to replace a gold where there was some decay under the inlay. In reply to my screwed nose over the potential bill, the nurse said something about it lasting a long time, longer than the old one. I pointed out that since the gold was nearly 50 years old, I wasn't interested in that side of things! I definitely won't require a filling of any sort in 50 years time. I don't think she got my point though ...
To have my tooth out will be £350. David had five fillings & I had 2 & we’ve had two checkups….& paid £1,500. I think that’s pretty standard here now, but our dentist surgery changed from NHS to private overnight 6 months ago. I phoned 40 other surgeries & couldn’t even find a waiting list for NHS!! S x
Years ago my dentist sent us an offer for private which my husband was all ready to accept. But I managed to find another practice that was still taking NHS patients - and only NHS patients. I asked why they did no private work and he waved his hand and said "I have NO work if I did", It was in a very deprived area outside Newcastle but the dentist practice was brilliant - one guy who worked part time did so to keep his hand in - he was a lecturer at the Dental Hospital! Wouldn't be as lucky these days I know,
Yes there are dentists but I think you have to go privately.
Hi, I recently had a tooth implant which has gone well so far. I think it is Alendronic Acid that dentists are more wary of because it slows your bone healing time. I paid for it because I was so impressed by the dentist when I was referred to him. On another note, can you post the link for the acoustic neuroma site? My mum has one. I didn't know there was a site for them! Is it as good as this one?

I have quite a few medical issues & due one tooth extraction thisFriday. My normal dentist won’t do it, but referred me to hospital. However, there’s a 6 -12 months waiting list there. I have just had my 7th infection in the same tooth in 6 years & I want it gone! But I still have to wait that time. But I struck lucky as a dental surgeon has joined our dental surgery (which suddenly changed from NHS to private six months ago). She has agreed to remove the tooth. I tell you my story in case you encounter these problems! You may get immediate treatment in hospital. Hope so. But as it’s not available to me I had to find @n alternative solution! S x
I think I may end up trying to follow the Private way but will not be surprised if they don't want me .Like all dentistry at present they can pick and chose.
My extraction will be £350. I had 4 dentists refuse to take my tooth out & one dental surgeon. They all had good reason for it. But it’s now 6 years & it needs to go…! S x

This is a bit daunting but!! I am over the shock of PMR and back to standing up straight to face the world.Doing reasonably - yes my BP is up with taking steroid but not as much as I thought it might.Dose of Steroid going down v slowly !.Look out Dentist on the 21st
I will get my teeth sorted somehow even if it leaves my pocket somewhat lighter.
Had no warning!! Previous checkups..on NHS said both of us were fine, nothing to be done…but then couldn’t get any appointment for 18 months as they couldn’t find any NHS dentists to work there. Then checkups & 7 fillings between us, plus costs of checkups, then my infection, pay for prescriptions, too, as private…antibiotics, free from Dr, £9.65 from dentist! Then £90 consultation fee for that appointment. Now the £350 for extraction. We should have been overseas on a dream holiday in a villa with pool, on a lake this month! But also the travel 8nsurance of £4,500 stopped that trip! Re italian trip. I’d settled on Ortisei for hols, but then the Innsbruck flights nearly all stop at end of skiing season! Looking at cortina d’ampezzo as can fly locally to Venice, & that’s nearer. ‘Messy’ year so far, tbh!! But going to Tuscany in June. Lovely. S xx
