Back of skull and neck pain

Always something new. Since before Xmas I have this pain at the base of my left skull also making my neck painful on turning. GP had me move arms, neck, etc and he thought it was just muscular. Well I still have it and it wakes me if I sleep on it. Also a few mild left eye headaches.

Could it be arthritis? The acoustic neuroma? I feel like a hypochondriac. What next?

Thanks for your thoughts. X

I hate it when doctors say, "...it might be...." and then send you away with no diagnosis and continued pain! Have you tried over the counter pain relief?

Your pain may be due to a pinched nerve-occipital neuralgia. I would definitely return to the doctor or, if possible, see another in the practice. It's time this was sorted out for you.

Wishing you well.

Ditto! When I asked about this a couple of weeks ago PMRPro added 3 links for me to consider. I am not sure how to repost them successfully so you can open them here but they are attached to my post headed "Overshot I think" from 16 days ago.

Sternocleidomastoid attachment to the skull? Or is it further back?

The pain radiates from the left back skull going down to those neck muscles (too bad I don't know my anatomical terms). I was worried that it has something to do with my brain but I think you are right (as usual) and has to do with aging, posture, etc. The headaches are not too bad. I have a lovely physio living across the street and I might ask her opinion. Thank you as always. How are you doing? Your weather looks amazing today. Sunny.

Thanks again. x

I'm one of the school of thought that posture doesn't always cause the problem - your posture is often the result of the problem! Our physios here hold that view and the lack of blame in the culture is really refreshing!

I wish I had a physio living across the street!

It is indeed a beautiful day again - much nicer than yesterday which was nice enough with sun but a very lazy wind! It was from the north so supposedly warmer - except for the windchill!!! Luckily my village is just around a corner from the valley that funnels a north wind directly on to the town so sheltered - it was a lot worse further west down the Brenner valley though! I'm doing OK - last week was hard, everything seems to take forever to do, I blame the long lunchtimes that lead to a morning-only culture in public offices. I'm hopeless in the morning and when you haven't achieved something official by 12.30 - forget it until tomorrow!

When I had deaths in my family my brain turns to cement and I cannot understand any of it even where to sign. Thinking of you. It is even sunny in London today. x

I have a phobia of filling in forms!! Doing it on a piece of paper was bad enough - online is just unbearable awful ;) However - there are charitable offices that provide an assistance service. Mainly I suspect because the locals can't cope with the Italian paper chain either. You can't do anything here without an ID card and loads of signatures - I must have signed my name about 20 times at the bank at one point!

I wonder how lucky I was to get a a Venezia Unica residence pass in Venice one summer when I stayed a month. One form and photo. Must be a one off.

Just to add thst I've suffered from head pain manifesting just like yours but after being fully checked out it was diagnosed as occipital neuralgia... although I feel PMRPro's assessment could also be significant and relevant in my case too. My main concern was GCA and it's definitely not that thank goodness. Yoga, massage and appropriate gentle stretching exercises have all helped.

I did worry about GCA but reading everyones comments and symptoms I didn't think it was that.

I really don't know whether it is or isn't in your case, but I'd always eliminate GCA first.

After your comments will def speak to my physio / neighbour. I sit too much (work, etc).

I wondered about GCA. Mine appeared after 5 years of PMR. I also wondered about cervical Spondylosis that produces pain in that area. I was diagnosed with the former by ultrasound and the latter by X Ray. Good luck!
