Actemra and chest discomfort

Tomorrow will be my third injection of Actemra as I attempt to taper from 40 mg daily down to 30 mg daily. I have more headaches than usual but nothing I can’t live with. But for the last two weeks I’ve had what feels like a big gas bubble in my chest and through to my back (right side). Anyone else experience this? Any comments? Thanks in advance for your responses.

Have you spoken to your GP or - even better - your rheumy nurse helpline? You should have a contact number when you are on a biologic.

Have you had a blood test this week? You should be monitored quite closely at first - my first blood test is after 2 weeks.

As chest infections are one of the common side effects of Actemra, I would certainly tell your doctor about this symptom. They used to routinely give you a chest X-Ray before prescribing this drug. I think, for TB. This might be a good idea. The “ bubble” is an odd symptom to report. I wonder if it is anything to do with your oesophageal area? I found that I was experiencing symptoms in my upper digestive system. I also routinely had a wheezy chest but no infection was diagnosed. I was X Rayed though.

Pancreatitis is a possible adverse effect.

Yes but surely not after 2 doses?

Difficult to say isn't it - it is mainly associated with long term use, you are right. But a PMR friend had a gastric bleed after 3 doses of ibuprofen ordered by her GP for PMR. any GI problems really do need to be reported - they may be nothing to do with the TCZ but an unconnected coincidental problem.

Didn’t know about the chest infection issue but I will pursue with my rheumy and/or GP and see where it goes. Thanks so much for responding, Jane.
