Yes. Just the very odd, very small glass. And nothing terrible has happened. But what a treat!

jayemmemm profile image
jayemmemm in reply toSharitone

I usually have a gin before dinner and a glass or two of red wine with dinner. I have two days a week free of alcohol and I find I don't sleep at all well on those days.

Since this thread is about alcohol I'd like to share a poem I wrote a few years ago which hopefully will amuse. Thanks to Andrew Marvel for the inspiration:

Come drink with me and we will prove

life's pleasures rest not just with love,

but in the quaffing of a quart

of foaming ale lies true delight.

The heady brew of hop-filled beer

will leave us yearning, never fear,

not for that which never cloys,

(that tiresome thing 'twixt girls and boys)

but rather, once the first draught's swallowed

why then! it should be quickly followed.

More and more until the chime

of landlord's bell sounds closing time.

Then would I say to thee 'My dear,

now that we've had our fill of beer;

Can we postpone our lovers' tryst?

For now I fear I'm far too tired and emotional'.

I hope Fran doesn't tell me off!

Yes, I have the odd glass of red wine. I had read somewhere that it was good for blood sugar, I am type 2 diabetic, and it hasn’t done me any harm

Only the very occasional small glass - that’s all I’d have anyway as alcohol tends to give me headaches. I haven’t noticed any difference since being on steroids…

PMRpro profile image
PMRproAmbassador

Of course - maybe more than the odd one, But not more than 1 small one with dinner these days (100ml)

SnazzyD profile image

Under 20ml Pred I had 2-3 units of alcohol a week. The alcohol content of wine varies so I took the amount that corresponded to that.

Yes, definitely, but usually just one.

I have a glass every night, a little larger than a restaurant serving 😉!

Yes I have half a bottle 3 or 4 nights a week. No adverse effects.

Carriemetz profile image

A glass abt 125 cl of dry white fizz every other evening at dinner. And do I look fwd to it! 🥂

Kendrew profile image
Kendrew

My hubby buys me those little bottles of wine (187ml/75cl) just enough to satiate my palette but not enough to paralyse me!!😂 Cheers my friends. 🥂

PMRpro profile image
PMRproAmbassador in reply toKendrew

Which? Mini-bottle or proper bottle (75cl is 750ml)? A proper bottle does me a week :) Much cheaper ...

Kendrew profile image
Kendrew in reply toPMRpro

Oh heck!... no good at maths or conversions!.....or maybe I'm just too intoxicated?? 😄 Miniature bottle says 187ml. It's a plentiful glassful though! I don't drink enough to finish off a whole bottle...even over a few nights. Occasionally fancy a glass once in a while.

PMRpro profile image
PMRproAmbassador in reply toKendrew

Which is 18.7cl. I get mini-prosecci, but they are 200ml here and that gives me a Sunday afternoon glass and a glass with dinner. And then a bottle of rose with a single "Esso" glass per night does the rest of the week. Anyone else remember the "Esso" glasses? While we were living in Germany in the 80s Esso petrol would do promotions, collecting vouchers for "free" glasses. I managed to get 12 during a trip to and all around the UK - over the years I have acquired cast-offs so even after 35 years I still have a matching set of 6! They fit in the dishwasher perfectly ...

Lochy profile image
Lochy in reply toPMRpro

Collected the Esso and the Shell glasses! Nice roomy tumblers, perfect for my wine 😉

PMRpro profile image
PMRproAmbassador in reply toLochy

Don't think I ever saw Shell ones. OH's favourite G&T glasses were freeby "cut glass" tumblers, Esso as well I think. I have beautiful real cut glass wedding presents - almost never used ... Dates me I suppose ;)

My favourite wine glasses are the enormous ones we get here (with 100ml in them!) but they are so impractical - don't fit in my dishwasher ...

borednow profile image

Time for a new dishwasher, methinks!!

It would have to be a bar-style one for the glasses I mean!

Wow! I've never heard of Esso glasses and I have lived in Germany nearly 50 years!?!

PMRpro profile image

Probably why - they were a promotion for Esso fuel in the UK, mostly in the 80s.

As I seem to spend my life dropping things I am deeply impressed with the intactness of your vintage glasses! 🥇

PMRpro profile image

I dropped and broke SOOOOO much in the early years of PMR! Including quite a few of them. Really upset me as I didn't break things - not like mum's sister who broke stuff left right and centre because she was always so slapdash!

Constance13 profile image
Constance13 in reply toPMRpro

I agree - more expensive, but mini bottles are better for me. If I open a large bottle I have to throw half of it away. I'm a "sipper" rather than a drinker. I even sip beer (to the unbelievable looks I get from my husband and SIL).

Rather have a nice liquor any day.

Check all your meds it is a definite no no with some. Just to kill the mood of joy. It is a very useful muscle/ relaxant/ pain killer moderately taken. Seems ok with Pred unless you have a tender digestive system. Our livers have to work hard. I do think psychologically it is pleasant though and that matters too.

Not the odd. I have wine at the weekends.

Red wine and G&T just not together and not every day! No point in feeling deprived If I don’t have to!

I usually drink white wine or anything fizzy with no ill effects. Recently had a lovely large glass of red with Sunday lunch and was dead achey and had that ‘unwell’ feeling the next day. As a result I’ll be sticking to white !

Carriemetz profile image

Me too. I have no problem with fizz - champagne best of course but bog-standard cava or prosecco is my usual mark and much appreciated too! 🥂

A nutritionist once told me to stick to gin and spirits rather than wine as being purer…I do like gin…🥳

Mai45 profile image

For what it’s worth, nobody knows better than my GP that I’m on steroids, as she’s the one prescribing them. Asked her 2 weeks ago if I should give up red wine, and she said “if you are getting 5 glasses out of a bottle, one glass a night is fine”. But to be fair I’m on a lower dose now - took years to get down to 2.5 mgm but now sadly back up to 4. I’ve actually switched to a box. I know they traditionally had a bad reputation but my favourite house red / vin ordinaire is now also in 2.25L, slightly cheaper and a lot more planet friendly. Lasts 6 weeks, and I seem to be ok with sticking to about the same size glass. Aiming for 2 wine free days per week - sometimes I even manage it!

Hi, Well I certainly did when first diagnosed, I was in such a state of shock I used to drink 2-3 glasses of wine mostly every night.

I’ve calmed down now, but that’s 2 years later.

I think there are some medications that state you should not drink any alcohol but I’ve never read any adverse effects with prednisolone.

Cheers 🍷

HeronNS profile image
HeronNS in reply to2013mayo

Adverse effects could occur for someone on prednisone as it has to be converted by the liver into prednisolone. I think.

I have ditched alcohol for the timebeing. I drink Real Kombucha which is delicious and reminds me of champagne - plus it is great for the gut. And Sea Arch instead of gin - a Sea&T instead of a G&T. I really don’t miss the alcohol at all, which surprises no-one more than me! 😳 When out I find that most places have Seedlip so I have that with tonic.

PMRpro profile image
PMRproAmbassador in reply toSusyTe

I wish I could get any of them - this being Italy, I was looked at as if I was an alien when I looked for some!!!!

SusyTe profile image
SusyTe in reply toPMRpro

I also tried a Peroni Libera - which I guess you have - although I am not a lager drinker normally. Very refreshing. It is slowly catching on - even Nicolas in France have started stocking non/low alcohol wine, apparently.

PMRpro profile image
PMRproAmbassador in reply toSusyTe

I have a couple of bottles of Chill Lemon from Peroni that the girls bought when here the other week - not a beer drinker at all but I could enjoy that in small amounts I think, it's 2%. I did develop a taste for Chinese beer when there - in self-defence, there is only so much water you can drink without getting bored!!!!

SusyTe profile image
SusyTe in reply toPMRpro

No need for self-defence. 😊😉 I would find it far more difficult if I hadn’t found alternatives. I now also have bottles of Pentire, Lyre’s and Three Spirit in the cupboard. I have to say I do feel better without the alcohol - less “inflamed”. Just hope it helps me to get to remission.

Thank you so much for introducing me to Sea Arch and Seedlip. I had never heard of either of them. I have just been on a wonderful internet search journey looking for more information which ended up with 'natural' paint. (The company shares it name, Bulmer, with a familiar cider maker which is how I got there.) The internet is a wondrous thing!

SusyTe profile image

My pleasure! And it is worth having a look at Three Spirit too. Their Social Elixir and The Livener give you a natural “high” and Nightcap soothes you ready for sleep.

Strange answer of the day...no, I don’t like wine!! But I have a Baileys about once a month. I’m on other tablets that don’t really allow it, but I don’t miss it now. If you’re worried, why not ask your doctor this morning, as I know you’ve been on Tramadol & other strong painkillers, where it may not mix well!!

Yes, I drink wine pretty much every evening. I didn't change my drinking habits when I started Pred, there's nothing in the leaflet about it. I eat very healthily though! I suppose if Pred was affecting your mood, up or down, you would not want alcohol to exacerbate that.

I wish that I could! Alcohol now gives me such a headache even after a Prosecco! I’ve found Tesco does a No Alcohol GnT which I like. The no alcohol Prosecco is rank!! 😛. It’s the BP meds that I have to take that interacts with the alcohol, 😕 that causes the headache 🤕 so not worth it!

I’ll not go into the amount that I drink; too embarrassing. My main issue is that it makes me pee to excess. So a prob when out and sitting on a train praying for next stop to come soon. Fortunately my underground station has a loo on the platform. Bliss

Usually not wine, but an Amaretto or Whiskey sour, Margarita, or a Liqueur straight-up. Usually has 1-1/2 oz liquor rest mix. Maybe one once every couple of weeks using 2 hrs separation from meds after a meal. In addition to Pred I’m also on a low dose of blood pressure meds. I cleared it with my GP. She said once in awhile is fine.

Sorry to go against the majority. I gave up all alcohol as soon as I went on 60mg of steroids for GCA. Both can affect gastrointestinal issues, diabetes, osteoporosis. I decided my occasional glass of wine could go. No problem. I am determined to emerge from this as healthy as possible.

I think the occasional serving of alcohol is probably ok, I prefer beer to wine and probably share a can or bottle of beer with someone else about six times a year, max. Sometimes I have a tiny glass of sherry. But I was never much of a drinker. Uglow

Cheer up Wine a little …Absolutely drink a small glass occasionally and same with beer it just determines what I make for dinner. However, during the holidays when my adult girls are here it’s a totally different story - then we’re talking shots (I only take a sip from husband’s to be part of merriment), Moscow mules, Margaritas, Mimosas, etc., but limit my intake and DO NOT keep up with them! Beer and wine regularly. I find that beer does not help the weight control since the pred makes me want to eat everything that doesn't eat me first. Dry wine, either white or red, is all I do since the carbs are lower.

Thanks. I'm doing the best I can but the PMR is kicking my butt when it comes to running.
