I didn’t for first few months when on high doses for GCA - but after that no probs.

Reds were/are (long off Pred) too heavy for me (never a great fan anyway) but rose and bubbly fine!

Oh that’s fantastic I have not missed as much as I thought I would. Was G and T and wine drinker. But I wanted to have a glass in the evening with friends

Then give it a go -gently to start with…

Many are fine with it, but some have said it doesn’t agree with them.

I had to change my tipple with PMR and pred - I used to like red wine and didn't really go for whites but red wine just became too heavy for me. I have a small glass, about 100mg, with dinner almost every night. Occasionally I drink a bit more but very rarely.

Beware though - if you have not been drinking for a while, your tolerance for alcohol will be lower. So don't overdo the holiday drinking!!

A glass a night wit( friends will be great I have been very good😁

Must be a very small glass - 100mg?! 🤣

Corrected! Obviously the fingers couldn't cope with mls instead of pred doses in mg. The Esso wine glasses from nearly 40 years ago to be exact 😉🍷

Oh love that you still have the Esso wine glasses, me too!

😂🥂 I managed to collect a dozen in the month we were in the UK when the offer was on, I had also accrued a few from charity shops and my brother had some almost identical. They have served us for everyday wine for the last 30 years! They fit nicely in the dishwasher so what is not to like?

didn’t drink for first couple of years , then Covid hit . We were all in isolation so we took to having a wine (white for me) at sunset , sitting in a different spot on our 10 acres every night . I felt no different . Of course all that original stress has past , but I have kept up with my nightly wine for stress relief. I do hope you enjoy your wonderful holiday , but do take it slow .

A small glass of wine (or two, occasionally) will not harm, but be aware that alcohol is an inflammatory agent and also can cancel out some of the steroids effect so it’s not recommended to get carried away! Lots of interesting places to see in Sicily, have fun!

soon after my diagnosis last October I went on a golfing trip to Spain didn’t want to spoil my holiday by not having a drink in the sunshine after golf! Still have my whisky (good for the arteries!) and a glass of wine most evenings - life’s too short - and tricky sometimes - so …………! Enjoy your holiday.

I stopped drinking completely during my first ten month spell with prednisolone, then I went back to red wine. Continued with the wine when I had a relapse and was back on 15 mgs prednisolone but decided to stop as it made me feel slightly unwell and 'jittery'. Give it a go and see how you feel.

Full agreement with all above! White wine most nights (a little more than 100mg). Prosecco when I can. On Pred over 7 years, now reached 3.5 and liver 'normal'! Have great holiday, I love all of Italy, my father spent the last 8 years of his career there, Genoa and Milan - lots of visiting!

l raised this with my doctor one Xmas. She said you will be fine with alcohol as long as you protect your stomach lining with opremazole.

If you don’t have it already you can ask your GP to prescribe it

I've been fine lately when drinking - tbh as it's usually celebratory I think it's more the lack of sleep that causes problem and the tendency to eat worse when I've had a glass or two. More a combination than just the alcohol.

I find that I am very achy after if I have drunk red wine the day before, but no probs with white.

Oh Sicily - lucky you! Can I come in your pocket??! My first visit - they opened the bedroom shutters and there was Mount Etna! Just a wonderful holiday… and a tour to Stromboli! Wow! Have a wonderful time and a glass too of something lovely!

I envy anyone who can drink wine. Sadly for the last 25 years I havent seemed able to metabolise alcohol of any kind. Instant migraines. I had hoped Pred might change that, seeing as it seems to change everything else, but no. Enjoy your trip to Sicily. I'm planning a trip to Verona and Mantua in the Spring. Has anyone been there?

Elvied profile image

I’ve been to Verona , just lovely . It has a big amphitheater so goggle it and see who is playing there when you go .

Juliet’s house is there too

Thanks. We can fly from Birmingham our nearest airport. So that's handy.

PMRpro profile image

I've been to Verona several times - to the opera in the amphitheatre but the town is lovely even without sitting on the stone steps for music! Been lots of other places but never Mantua. Are you including a trip to Lake Garda? I haven't met anyone who didn't love it - despite all the tourists these days.

My last wine was in 1986. My health has not suffered and my coronary arteries are free of calcium. Don’t miss the headaches and depressive mood in my case.

hello everyone pleased to meet you all. I am new to here just diagnosed last week and started 15 mg of pred on Tuesday. It was my Physio who thought I had PMR and said I must go for blood tests. GP reticent as was sure it wasn’t - I insisted and here we are .

Yes I was wondering about wine having been so ill for 9 months and describing my body as inflamed I’ve given up alcohol and have found some reasonable substitutes

Naughty and Nozecco I drink them from a champagne glass very chilled and no don’t miss alcoholic versions at all. I guess it’s all a bit of trial and error with things on these drugs 🤷‍♀️

Lovely time of year to be visiting Sicily have a fab time.

In the beginning I didn't change anything much and didn't notice any effect on PMR drinking alcohol in moderation. I can't drink anything now 8 years in and stuck on 8mg. It disrupts my sleep and I feel horrible next day. But that's probably just age now.

Orange_2022 profile image
Orange_2022

I still drink wine in moderation - a glass or even two, 2-3 times a week seems fine in terms of impacting PMR. Much more definitely contributes to a flare (usually in conjunction with travelling, change of diet). Enjoy!

Well if this study is right……you should be OK, sounds a No Brainer to me!

“Red wine and chocolate, the recipe to stave off dementia

A study has shown the combination helps protect the brain. By Lauren Shirreff

Those who prefer red wine to white have long had good reason to be smug about it: the drink has previously been shown to lower cholesterol, fight inflammation and even prevent tooth decay. Now there is yet another health benefit to add to the pile. A study by researchers at Queen’s University Belfast, published this week, found that consuming red wine instead of other types of alcohol could cut your risk of developing dementia by up to a third. That’s if you also eat the odd square of dark chocolate with a daily cup of tea, at least.

Researchers from the university’s Institute for Global Food Security reviewed the diets of more than 120,000 British adults aged between 40 and 70. Those who ate at least six servings of these foods per day were 28 per cent less likely to develop dementia over the course of 10 years than those who did not.”

we had two weeks in Taormina one year…first two weeks in October. Weather was glorious, have a good time. Can’t comment on wine, I take other pills that don’t allow you alcohol…think I’ve had small Baileys in about 8 years!

I haven’t stopped drinking wine since I was diagnosed with PMR and so far it hasn’t affected me .Currently on 7.5 mg . As with everything I guess it’s the same with most things -everything in moderation . Have a great time

WELL, didn't you get some great responses! Smart ladies....and my future is looking brighter💞

I have a glass of red most nights before dinner, although the last 2 weeks I have abstained as on medication for siatica and I don't want to upset the apple cart. It has never affected me adversely in any way. When I'm at the beach with my daughters it's often 2 or3. It keeps me sane. Janis
