When I was told that my condition was PMR, I spent hours googling it to find out more about it.
That’s how I stumbled across HealthUnlocked. I have found that being a part of a group of people who are all dealing with the same or similar health issues is really good, some of the advise that I have had from some of you has been really helpful and reassuring 😊. my partner is very caring and brilliant at looking after any of my family that are unwell so I am in safe hands!
One thing that I have stopped since PMR began, is alcohol 🍷! I used to have a drink nearly every evening which I know isn’t healthy, I was planning to cut back anyway!
It has been 6 weeks now since I had a glass 🥃 of rum! I’m really missing it now. I have read that alcohol is not good with PMR. Does this mean that I can’t have a little one occasionally!!??

I dont think you necessarily need to give up completely. I have an occasional drink of cider or lager when i fancy one. I havent over indulged since pmr but during my first christmas i didnt deprive myself either and didnt suffer any sude effects. Maybe just try o e drink at home and see how you feel. YBB
I specifically asked the GP about alcohol when I was prescribed pred (he did look a bit taken aback but I took the view it’s always best to know about these things). He said I didn’t need to stop but only to take it in moderation, which is what I do. I’d miss wine but equally if he’d told me I couldn’t have any I’d have complied without too much difficulty. I've not had any problems with the odd glass or two.
I found my tastes changed but I haven't stopped drinking.wine (except in naff pubs in the UK but I'm not sure that what they sell is wine ) although I have had periods of no alcohol - which made not the slightest difference. In fact, during the first 5 years of PMR without pred it was a glass of wine in the evening that was the most effective pain relief I found!
I dont think its any harm, If you can tolerate it. I cannot, i feel like hell if i have it. Pmr brought my system very low. I used to like a glass of wine occasionally but even one now has its payback for me. I mean i still very occasionally have some but its more for an occasion. I battle fibro too so that doesnt help!!! Certainly if i didnt have such a bad tolerance i would have it within reason!!
Bad reaction to wine was one of the things that eventually led me to discover I have histamine intolerance - wine is the biggest culprit. It could also be the sulphites of course. I now can't drink any alcohol except fizzy stuff like champagne/prosecco or the odd glass of Guinness.
I still drink in the same pattern as before PMR. None during the week and too much at the weekends! I get no pain symptoms when on the right dose of pred for me. Alcohol makes no difference to that.
Do you think that alcohol may effect the recovery time? It’s just that from what I have read online and on toys of posts on here, a healthy diet can speed up recovery?
I doubt it speeds up recovery - my diet is pretty healthy and it makes no difference. What it does seem to me to do is minimise a lot of the complaints people have about PMR and pred.
A healthy diet low in carbs stops you putting on weight but doesnt cure or speed up the recovery from pmr although eating healthily usually makes you feel better anyway even if just psychologically.YBB
It happens regularly down here in bosham because idiots refuse to read the sign that says the tide will come right up the slipway and you often see a car sail past the cafe!!
Thanks so much for letting me know. Unfortunately I can’t make it this Thursday but I would really appreciate being added to your group so I get notified of the next one please? Cheers!
We have one in Ilkley soon too it’s just a short train ride from Leeds lovely day out. Send your email to Ilkley as tangocharlie said and I’ll send you details.
It actually depends on the other medication that you may be on for other illnesses or the side effects and you as an individual.
If you are eventually put on certain Steroid Sparers like Methotrexate or Azathioprine alcohol should be avoided , as these put more burden on you liver and kidney function.
If you take other Pain Medications like Tramadol , Anticonvulsants and some Antidepressants alcohol is best avoided because it can make you very drowsy and can cause accidents.
If you have Digestive issues , it suffer from GERD and have stomach side effects from taking steroids it is better not to drink alcohol .
If you have no other issues , the odd glass of rum at the weekend may well be fine , you can try it and see how you feel.
I find I can't manage a drink , but that's Me , everybody's different .
So , if your OK with it you could raise a glass for me
Thats good to hear 😃. Having been on dry January anyway, and then thinking I couldn’t drink at all on Pred, I was thinking I was in for a long tee total period. It’s nice to know I will be able to join in on social occasions now as I think I’d be missing it🥂
Gave up alcohol when diagnosed. Now even a sip to try my OH's goes straight to my head. So think I will be on tap water till I snuff it. Very boring when everyone else is drinking but I can get really merry on water!! 😂
I haven’t really changed my drinking pattern, ( above the government guidelines 🙈) and it has made no difference to me unless it contributes to the night sweats.
The only vice I have left! I have continued to enjoy vino every night and I think it has helped!! I don't go overboard but certainly drink regularly and it hasn't had a negative impact ... doc said it was ok, but I am not on any other medications. Hic 🥂, you know what they say about Aussies, but then I think we were taught by the Brits! 😜💃
I agree, it’s the only pleasure I have left and I’ll have a glass or two of red wine most evenings and I look forward to it!!!!It helps me get through the hunger and agitation of night times. 🍷
I hadn’t been drinking then went on vacation and enjoyed a beer or glass of wine with dinner with no ill effects except weight gain which also could be because we ate out often 😊
