Taking Prednisone with cbd oil?

This is the highlights of an article I was reading on taking cbd oil with prednisone.

marijuanabreak.com/does-cbd...

If someone would read this and see if you are understanding it like I am. I believe it states NO, we should not mix the two. This is really a bummer as I was going to try and use cbd oil as a dmard. I have found this on two different sites.

Thank You

Does CBD Interact with Prednisone?

If you suffer from an inflammatory condition and take prednisone, you might be wondering whether you can try CBD too. You might think that CBD is safe since it comes from a plant and causes very few side effects.

But unfortunately, despite its relative safety, CBD does have the potential to interact with other drugs. This means you should be cautious when adding CBD to your existing medication.

When you take CBD (or any medicine), it passes through your digestive system to your liver via the hepatic portal vein. In the liver, an enzymatic pathway called the cytochrome P450 pathway (CYP450) metabolizes CBD.

This process involves several enzymes, including one known as CYP3A4. This is an enzyme which is involved in metabolizing around 25% of all drugs, including CBD and prednisone.

Taking CBD can inhibit the action of CYP3A4. This means that other drugs metabolized by the same enzyme get broken down more slowly. Therefore, CBD can increase the concentration of drugs like prednisone in the body, raising the risk of side effects.

To find out whether your medication interacts with CBD, scientists recommend that you use the ‘grapefruit test.’ Grapefruit and grapefruit juice interact with many of the same drugs that CBD does.

So, if your doctor has told you to avoid grapefruit with your medicine, you should probably avoid CBD, too.

Is It Safe to Take CBD and Prednisone Together?

Since CBD oil can interact with prednisone, making side effects more likely, doctors don’t consider them safe to take together.

Sadly, this is the case for many other medications, too. Although for some people enhancing the effects of their medicine can be helpful, for others, it can be dangerous.

Therefore, if you suffer from an inflammatory condition and want to try CBD, you may need to stop your prednisone first. However, you must do this carefully and under the supervision of your physician.

On the other hand - it is actually doing exactly the same as it is claimed that methotrexate and other DMARDs do as steroid sparers. It is less of a problem for us as the aim is to taper our pred dose to the lowest dose that manages our symptoms. It is a process called titration and assures we take the least amount of pred possible. So if the CBD increases the amount in the blood for the same dose - that's fine.

Thanks for the reply.

Somewhere in the article it also said that it could raise OR lower the amount of medication. If it raised it that would be bad? If I decrease the pred. and it gets lowered thru the use of cbd that would be bad also?

Really trying to reason this out for myself.

Thanks

This is the other article I have been reading

cbdeducationonline.com/cbd-...

This one states that pred. could be kept in the system longer with the use of cbd oil.

Unfortunately there isn't anyone here that knows very much about cbd. I have asked two dr's and they just don't know enough to help me out.

I have heard of many who takes both, but they make sure they take it several hours apart. Like 5 - 6 hours after the pred is absorbed they take the cbd or thc.

I tryed it 2 month a year ago, and it did make me able to taper quicker. But I could´n get the same sort next time and the other kind did nothing and tasted horrible.

Which is the same thing - not excreting it means the blood level will rise.

Linny3 profile image
Linny3 in reply toPMRpro

Does that have the possibility of harming the liver because the pred remains longer than usual?

PMRproAmbassador in reply toLinny3

Don't see why - you reduce the oral dose to adjust the level to what works to manage the symptoms. To coin a phrase: you need what you need.

When speaking to my endocrinologist I mentioned various supplements, which apart from Vitamin D he did not see the need, however he felt there was a case for taking cbd oil. He did not mention any side effects. Maybe a question for our Mr Pothecary today?

There isn't a lot of mainstream science study out there yet. There seems to be a movement in Israel to start up some clinical studies to see if it does have a significant anti-inflammatory effect.

I used several drops of CBD oil under my tongue every day for a year for no appreciable improvement.I am now taking Boswellia Serratta capsules twice a day which I feel has helped me reduce from 5mg to 1mg of Pred.

The one definite improvement I feel can put down to Boswellia is my arthritic Knees are less sore & painful. All the best. Robin.

I have been using Flexseq cream for some months (£10.99 for 50g) on my Knees but the price doesn't really warrant continuing with as the affect seems minimal

I used CBD over 18months with Prednisolone. I had been having trouble getting down from 15mg without flaring. I was able to get down to 6mg over the period I took it. I now take it occasionally to help with pain and I am currently on 4mg of Prednisolone. My next reduction using Dorset Lady's method has been halted as I am having dental issues and my dentist wanted me to stay on the same dose until the infection has gone and the treatment is complete.

The only thing I will say is that when I take CBD I give a two hour gap from taking other meds.

I have been taking cbd oil for a year and have tapered from 50mg pred to 9mg whereas before taking cbd oil I was stuck on the high dosages of pred. I take it 2 hours apart from pred, and a few times it has been closer together, no ill effects. I also use the oil on my scalp as needed. Works great for aches and pains, and the balm is also great on anything that aches. I won't be without it. I use Lazarus Naturals high potency and currently take, according to how I feel, 40mg to 60mg a day in 3 or 4 doses.

Thank you so much for your responses, they are very helpful. My game plan is to take my prednisone around 11pm. Then take the first dose of cbd oil as early as I can(to help fight off the inflammation), between 4-6AM. My next dose will be late day. I am taking a very high dose of cbd, so I think I will only take it twice a day for now. I am working with the owner of a hemp farm to help figure out dosing of the cbd oil. know my back feels much better since being on cbd oil and I was trying to figure out a regime for decreasing the prednisone. I started this morning and just have to see how it goes.

Wish me luck and good sense. :)

There are two different sorts - Sativa oil which is energising and stimulating and Indica which is relaxing and sedating . I take my Sativa oil twice a day - at lunch time 4 hours after my prednisone and again at 5 pm . Then at 10 pm I take my Indica oil .

Linny3 profile image
Linny3 in reply tokatiemills

not sure what sativa oil is?

miss-philosopher profile image
miss-philosopher in reply toLinny3

sativa is the cbd dominant oil, indica is the thc dominant oil

My supplier advised me about the differences and told me not to take it at the same time as my prednisone because it might interfere with the prednisone .

Have you tried your pred. at bedtime ? Should be free of any pain at upget time. Certainly works for me. Same if I take at 3am but bedtime is more convenient. Good luck if you test different times.

I have been experimenting with CBD as well hoping it might work as a steroid sparer before I try methotrexate. I am currently taking 22.5mg of prednisone and 50mg of CBD. I take 25mg of CBD in the morning at the same time as the prednisone and it is fine. My findings are that is works great for the exhaustion and the general sick feeling like you have the flu. It doesn't do anything for the pain though, but for me the pain is easier to tolerate than the other symptoms.

My dr. has prescribed methotrexate, which I haven't started yet, so my plan is to stop taking the CBD and wait a few days and see if the symptoms come back. Then I'll know for sure whether the CBD is doing anything. I think it is. But I will stop taking it when I start the methotrexate so I will know which drug is doing what.
