The cbd oil has taken care of steriod withdrawal symptoms quite well, but how will I know if a flare is coming on.... I'm wondering if the cbd oil will mask any flaring symptoms??? Anyone out there had experience with this? Those of you who use cbd oil, what is your experiece? Thanks.

Ummm, I'm not sure what the problem would be if CBD oil "masked" PMR symptoms. Wouldn't that be exactly what you want - no need to take more pred. Maybe even preventing a flare?

I also have GCA, will be tapering in a few days I hope.

Gosh......It’s that good. I can hardly imagine it.

I don’t know anything about CBD but logically I’d think that it is stopping the pain either because it is damping down inflammation(good) or affecting pain perception so you don’t feel the pain from inflammation that’s still there (not so good), or both or some other unknown mechanism. This is the down side of new uses for substances, you don’t know. For me withdrawal pain is helped by Paracetamol but GCA is not, so perhaps the flare would be the same, but it is probably guesswork. No doubt research will lag sadly behind usage and we’ll all be relying on you pioneers.

I don't see the problem? If it masks the symptoms you don't have a flare. If the symptoms do break through you have a flare - no different from just being on pred since all pred does is manage the inflammation to relieve the symptoms. Nothing available has any effect on the CAUSE of the symptoms and if the pred+ dose is not enough to manage the inflammation - you will develop symptoms. Whether they are due to GCA or "just" PMR.

I have a tendency to overthink.

If CBD oil manages pain rather than inflammation like pred, couldn't it mask GCA symptoms?

PMRpro profile image
PMRproAmbassador in reply to Janstr

I think it is very unlikely that CBD oil is effective enough to mask GCA pain entirely. But again it comes to the same thing: if it is working because it is an antiinflammatory - and that is how pain relief is achieved in PMR and GCA - then that is the same as you get with pred. If the pain breaks through you aren't on enough pred.

Thanks. I didn't realise that's how CBD oil works

Don't think anyone knows exactly how it works! I did say "if"...

I have been taking CBD for about 3 months, sometimes in oil form and other times in capsule form. The doctors will not prescribe and therefore i normally buy from health food suppliers. I have arthritis, osteoporosis and a trapped nerve in my spine following sciatica several years ago. Currently I have very little pain which is a first for many years and am able to walk my dog for much longer than ever before (poor dog). It is annoying that the doctors have been unable to help me but I have been able to find suitable pain relief myself. It is also annoying that as I am of a certain age I would be eligible for free prescriptions, however as the doctors will/can not prescribe this I have to pay for a product that is relatively expensive. Lets hope that the medical world will recognise the use of this product as I feel it could help many.

hello jestjules, i have been referred by my dr to a cannibis clinic, as i want to talk to the physicians there,, get there advice re taking cbd capsules for anxiety, sleep, and as i am reducing pred from 8 to 7(started at 40 for pmr over 2 yrs ago) taking long time to reduce as i have had many problems and stress in my family over last couple years, i want to know how safe, and helpful cbd would be in my situation, and with my condition, as i take BP script, and low dose paxil, for llong time, do you take any other meds, other than prednisone, i am waiting for a call from clinic to book me an appointment, my anxiety prevents me from functioning some days, and sleep, i don,t know if you,ve read my story, but my one son was diagnosed with incurable cancer a yr ago last june, other son fighting addiction for last 2 yrs, and family lost everything because of that, so all of this has caused me so much stress,

Hi Sorry to hear your sad and unfortunate tale. I too suffer from stress due to my husband being diagnosed with terminal cancer following him having 6 years of treatment and surgery. I do not take any other meds other than cbd..........just stopped taking my happy pills as i think the two together was fuddling my brain too much - thought I was getting alzheimer's but..............hoping not. Brain is much clearer today..........and hoping it will continue. Let me know what the clinic advises, maybe I will speak to my doctor about this.

I'm so sorry to hear about your situations. It would be nice to just put a few drops of cbd oil under the tongue and everything would be just fine.... the reality is that life in this old world is hard and stressful.

I have been taking cbd oil for about a month; it helps with my steroid withdrawals easing any headaches and helps me stay on an even keel. I have GCA and PMR and naturally on prednisone 41.5mg and was going to start a taper today but I believe I have caught a virus and am not feeling well so I had better wait awhile. I am doing a lot of research on cbd oil and believe there is great benefit with it. I'm taking about 35-40mg a day. This seems to be my "sweet spot". Bluebird Botanicals in Colorado I think has a decent product and that is what I am using, a full spectrum 1500mg. I would be happy to share anything I have found with you.

I found these two web site to be very helpful.

cbdoilusers.com/cbd-oil-rec...

I'm hopeful cbd oil will help with the inflammation as it is a very powerful anti-inflammatory. I just wish there were established guidelines for us. I hope you find this as helpful as I did.

I also have osteoporosis. CBD oil is showing great promise for bone building.. Certain components of cbd oil are especially good for this and this is why we should be taking only whole spectrum, the whole plant, in our cbd. I also take it in its raw form. It is hard to sift through all the info, much of it bogus, that's why I like to see clinical trial reports, but even then I think there is a need for caution.

I live in Denver. Where is Blue bird Botanicals? Is that where you got your cbd oil? I'm quite confused by all the information out there. Worked my way down to 5mg for PMR but all the symptoms came back. Did a PET scan yesterday to see if something else is causing all the pain in my shoulders and hips. Won't have results for a few days.

Bluebird Botanicals is in Colorado, their website is bluebirdbotanicals.com/

I use 2, the Complete and Signature 1500mg, using the Signature during the day and the Complete at night. Trying to figure out which one helps best with sleep. Both have added terpenes for even more benefits. Check out the info on their website and the COA (certificate of anaylsis). I feel it is helping me with pain and keeping me on an even keel. Not to mention the great anti inflammatory benefits. Am down to my lowest dose of pred all year at 37mg and was at 47.5 a month ago. A big achievement for me!

Finding the right dosage is a bit of challenge, but can be done. Might be worth a try for you?

I might add that they are rather expensive, but they do offer an assistance program with 40% off if you qualify.

Does it help with pain or inflammation, or both.

gtate1914 profile image
gtate1914 in reply to blueisgreen

It helps with pain, specifically headaches, and I believe inflammation also because inflammation will cause pain. And I am tapering more successfully than in the past, whether that's due to the cbd oil or not I cannot definitely say. But cbd oil has been proven to be a powerful anti-inflammatory and is currently in clinical trials in Israel as a steroid sparer.

I've been taking 1ML (100 mg CBD oil 0 THC) per day (25 mg 4 time a day) for a month now and even though I'm not completely pain free it has relaxed me a lot. I sleep like a baby! Stressful situations don't affect me as bad as they used to. I haven't tried to reduce yet, as per doc's orders, so I don't know how it will work on withdrawal symptoms. Also, I'm not sure if I'm taking enough. It seems that with CBD it's a trial and error thing. How much are you taking?

gtate1914 profile image
gtate1914 in reply to kulina

I started my first week on a low dosage, taking about between 35-45mg per day, divided in 3 doses. I tend to go by symptoms. I also use the salve on my temples, forehead, to target inflammation and achiness. I'm new to this, started 6 or7 weeks ago. It is helping me. What brand are you using? I've been using Bluebird Botanicals from Colorado, the 1500mg Complete and 1500 Signature, with added terpenes.

gtate1914 profile image
gtate1914 in reply to gtate1914

I meant to say low dosage first week then gradually going up to 35-45 in 3 weeks.

kulina profile image
kulina in reply to gtate1914

I'm really new to this too. Yea, low dosage didn't really do much for me that's why I'm up to 100 mg. I use Medterra CBD tincture 3000 mg, zero THC. They are in California and I really don't know if this is the best. Would I use less with another brand? I just don't know. It's really a maze trying to figure out which oil would work out and it can get expensive.
