Has anyone experienced pudendal nerve block injections? I may have to have these.

I am in the scottish borders and could travel to Edinburgh to hospital there. I have pudendal neuralgia as a result of a mistake during surgery and don't want the same surgeon to gave me the injections.

Hi Julia,

I am in the north east and have to say that unfortunately I don't know of anyone around here who do guided injections and you really do want them to be guided I would advise.

I haven't had PN injections however mine have been in my piriformis (PN and others trapped there)

Of course the PN is anaesthetised in an epidural so there will be many who have done this procedure without any ultrasound or CT guidance but I would always want mine to be guided. Ha ha, think I am repeating myself to hammer the point home.

There may be other Doc's now but the only ones I know who are PN specialists are Dr De Mellow in Manchester, Dr Greenslade in Bristol (easy jet, cheap from my local airport) and Dr's Baranowski and Curren in London.

Of course you could find out what and how the procedure would be done forst and make your mind up then. Even have them do it if it works great if it doesn't ask to be referred to these other guy's who after all are the experts.

Unfortunately it seems that the waiting list for then is rather long, we so need more of them. One lady reckoned a year now to see Dr G and I think Dr B has been running at that time scale for a while now. Don't take my word on this, it is worth checking out independently, just to warn you of possible delays with NHS anyway.

Hope you get things sorted.

Who diagnosed your PN ?

I have heard that there is a good pelvic physiotherapist in Edinburgh however but although this might help you, if scar tissue is involved it possibly wouldn't actually be a total solution. Maybe still worth a try tho' if you haven't already.

Take care.

Helen

Hi Julia,

I had my first PN injection about 1 1/2 weeks ago. It was ultra sound guided. They gave me a little versed and some fentanyl iv. I had some discomfort at the injection site for a few days, but it did help. I am going for my follow up next week and I am ready for another one. I have multiple pain issues from my hysterectomy but at least they may have this nerve under control. I HOPE!! BTW, the PNE happened recently within the last 2-3 months. I had my surgery 3 years ago. I don't know why it suddenly flared up now.

Thanks for that information. I am now being told that my nerve pain stems from my hysterectomy sixteen years ago and that it can be dormant until triggered by further trauma, in my case the recent bladder repair operation. At the moment the pain has calmed down and some days I don't need medication and others I need only one rather than the four I have been prescribed. So I may have a dilemna when I see the neurologist of being fine at that time but fearful of it all coming back; so do i go for the injection or wait until I am in crisis and having to wait months to see someone again. I can't help thinking that when God designed our bodies he got a few things wrong!

Hi Juliahall I came across your post about prudently nerve block injection from some years back I have very similar symptoms as you described pain intermittent sometime and I am booked in for the injection but worried it does not work or maybe damage something else not sure I should go through with it therefore wondered what you decided in the end/if it worked for you?

I had this injection 10 weeks ago by Mr Bayliss at the Pain Clinic at QA Hospital near Portsmouth, a really great guy, sorry to say it did not work for me. Very disapointed but I am seeing him again in a fortnight and will see if he offers me anything else.
