So I applied this lidocaine gel that I got prescribed to see if it would help my vaginal Itching. Well I woke up an hour later with the worst itching and sensitivity of my life. Then it turned into my vagina burning. But the part thats bothering me the most is I'm having bad clitoral discomfort, its burning and has pressure its very uncomfortable now. Prior i never had clitoral issues and now I do from using this??? I'm going crazy. Has anyone else experienced this?

Is there anything else in your gel except Lidocaine? The reason you are experiencing burning in other areas is because your body temperature warms the gel into almost a liquid form and it spreads. The other thing to look at is how much Lidocaine is in your gel (it shouldn’t be more then 5%) and what is the base for the gel. Good luck with your itching. Have you tried taking a double dose (2 pills) of Benadryl?

I do feel for you having had negative vulval reactions to various products, even KY jelly. I've never tried lidocaine. I have a history of eczema and asthma, and skin reactions in other parts of the body - hands and face mostly. You could see if using ice brings relief - but only for short periods and it must be covered with cloth or similar or it can cause ice burns I believe. I used it when Ihad both nerve pain and a vulval skin reaction together and was feeling pretty desperate. And it will ease...do whatever you can to get through the next few days nice music, whatever. Take care and good luck.

Hi Ambernicole,

I hope you are feeling a little better now. There are two things I have thought of. First of all who prescribed the lidocaine? I’ve used lidocaine patches for pain which is what they are licensed for ( including the cream and gel), I’ve not heard it used for itching though although the doctor maybe using it off license. It might be worth getting back in touch with them to check where exactly they wanted the gel applied as they might have not wanted it applied all over but in specific areas that wouldn’t cause this type of reach. If it was a GP or gynae and it’s difficult to get back in touch you can always go to a sexual health clinic as they are used to dealing with these problems plus they can also check you have the medical condition you’ve been diagnosed with - as it might be something else.

The second thing is how much did you apply? Lidocaine usually should only been applied in small amounts. Where you advised to leave it on for a certain time before washing it off? These might be something you can check.

I hope this helps and that you have been given some further advice from you doctor(s). Please let us know how you get on.

Have you tried Hydro-Caine Gel ? It has lidocaine in it and comes in a syringe like container but without the needle. It has an initial burning sensation upon application each time you use it but then it goes away and stops the vaginal itching so you can go about your day. The only thing is you would have to arrange with your GP on how to dispose of the containers after as you can’t put them in general household waste and the chemist / pharmacy that issued them won’t take the waste either. I normally get given a small orange clinical waste bag to pop them into then hand them back to the GP surgery to dispose of them for me.
