Hysterectomy
Hi,
I too had a fibroid that weighed 5lb and ended up having a hysterectomy at the age of 50 .
The operation in itself was a breeze came thro with no ill effects .I was cut from belly button to top of vagina and stapled together with metal staples.
The one thing that was weird was when they removed the drain.
I fealt pretty tiered the day after the operation but they got me out of bed and walking to the loo.I believe the sooner you can get up the better it is .
I was due to be in hospital 3 days but my consultant suggested I stayed another day just to rest .
When home I was advised not to do anything not even lift a kettle for at least a week .I was told I could go back to work after 12 weeks but went back after 8 .
I do believe its your attitude that aids recovery ,I used to try walk a little way every day after about a week and after about a month gradually started to do house work.
Everyone is different take your time to recover if you need to a HYSTERECTOMY is major surgery at the end of the day .
Thank you, I actually don't know now where the incision is being done. The nurse at the pre op said it will be bikini line, but I have read loads on here that have had the incision from the belly button.
When I went to see the consultant he said it was the size of a large melon, but when I said this o the nurse she said it could be a yellow melon or large green melon.
The consultant said it was likely I was having my ovaries removed, but the nurse said by looking at the notes it said ovaries likely to be retained, due to my age, lol.
I'm 44, 2 grown up children (both in their twenties), and a grandson, who tires me out, so I definitely don't want children. I suppose I will have to just wait and see what happens on the day, only one more month of waiting.
Thank you for your advice.
Perhaps you could call the consultants secretary and ask them to clarify these points if it is worrying you. I had mine a fair few years ago, but take your time to recover. It is good to be mobile as soon as you can, but remember there is a lot to heal inside that you can't see. No lifting or housework for at least six weeks. Physio should give you exercises to do too. The better you heal now the longer it is in the long run. Be kind to yourself. Take care.
Thank you sue, I will ring her on Monday, them are the only things I need clarifying, at least then I will have peace of mind. I'm looking forward to having 6 weeks of no housework, haha. Thank you sue.
