Masks,iv etc

During the war falling debris flattened and moved my nose, I cannot breath very well, but when years later I asked several times for reconstruction was told wouldn’t do it and not to ask again. Now I have difficulty wearing mask, cannot go into public places. My consultant says I need more iv antibiotics to be given at home, but I have go to hospital for the first dose etc. I’ve only been into public places 3 times this year, twice to take sputum sample to surgery reception and have then got another infection. . I’m now told that I cannot be set up and given first injection at home, hence I cannot have the iv treatment. I’m very afraid of risking hospital, has anyone ever had the full iv treatment at home, including the initial preparation. Any help much appreciated. In meantime I’m practicing wearing various styles of masks !

Hiya - I’m sorry to hear you need IV’s. My son’s always has first dose in hospital as you can get an allergic reaction and it is much safer to be in hospital if you need urgent treatment. My personal experience of going in hospitals during the pandemic is that they are very quiet. Hardly anyone about and all the waiting areas are socially distanced. Hope you get sorted soon.

Thanks for your quick reply. I’ve done 6 I.v. courses myself at home, with help from late husband, after having canula set up and first dose at hospital, so am aware of the risks. My daughter has camper van with table and I’ve suggested she could take me and park outside hospital for set up and first dose in van, and hopefully wouldn’t have to go in. Went to the hospital, QE Birmingham last summer, it was really busy, struggled with mask, face shield not so good. Hope your sons doing well, good luck.

Hello I’ve always had to stay in hospital for a couple of days, whenever I’ve had to start a course of home IVs, this is mainly to check that you are doing things correctly, as it may have been a while since the previous IVs and also due to the possibility of an allergic reaction.

I was an in-patient on the 1st August, just for the night (around 30 hours), for some tests and was very impressed with how Covid safe I felt. I had to wear a mask on arrival, once I was settled in I was not required to wear it. All staff, including the catering staff, were masked and they only really came near me for obs and any other tests/treatments I had.

I suspect your idea of having the first dose of IVs in your daughter’s camper van, may not be taken up, but you never know. I wish you well and that you get things sorted.
