Throat problems

I have been suffering for months now with a swollen, achey, dry throat causing pain and discomfort, antibiotics spent work, I am awaiting an ultrasound and swab and blood test results. I am wondering if there is a link to PCD and the chronic sinus problems which may cause problems in the throat in the long run, has anyone else had this??

Chrissie - do you tend to breath through your mouth as a result of your PCD? This tends to exacerbate mouth/throat complaints. My daughters mouth breathing has reduced significantly, even when asleep by doing daily nasal/sinus rinses. She also has a spoonful of Manila everyday and I can’t think when she last complained of a sore throat - certainly not in the last year.

Chrissie - by complete coincidence there's an article in today's Guardian about beating sore throats. Apparently last year sore throats accounted for a quarter of inappropriate antibiotic prescriptions as most sore throats are viral not bacterial. Also it says that 200 Superdrug stores are currently offering a free sore-throat consultation service including a swab to determine whether the problem is viral or bacterial.

My daughter has major problems with a sore throat. She has been doing nasal rinses once or twice daily since August. We went to California and were unable to do them for a couple days and her sinuses flared up and throat became sore. We quickly ran to Store to find distilled water and nasal rinse salt. I believe the daily rinses are crucial. I am curious if any adult w pcd has ever taped their mouth w medical tape at night to promote nasal breathing instead of mouth breathing? My mother w sleep apnea has just started this and said it is making a world of difference. Wonder if it would help w sore throat in people w pcd? I don’t feel comfortable trying w my teen child. It anyone has tried this please let me know?

Thanks, I haven't taped before so I cant help with that one, the manuka honey seems to have been helpful so I will keep doing that, it's worth paying the extra money for a good one, good luck x

What would you tape your mouth with?

I wouldn't feel at all comfortable doing this as people who have pcd tend to breathe through their mouths precisely because their sinuses are clogged and stuffed with mucous. If you would tape your mouth or your child's mouth and his sinuses become stuck, I could see this leading to a potential problem.

The best you could do is rinse his sinuses a couple times a day, and 15 minutes before bedtime with hypertonic solution.

I keep a hypertonic spray handy that I make myself with ordinary isotonic solution and add some regular sea salt because I'm cheap and it works great for me.

My mom uses medical tape. I was thinking the same as you with regards to people with sinus issues. My mother was seeing negative effects from mouth breathing like damage to pupils and mouth/teeth/gums. I wonder if the mouth breathing contributes to my daughter’s excessive amount of mouth ulcers?
