pbc and sore gums: Hi everyone, hope your all... - PBC Foundation
pbc and sore gums
I don't but I also don't think it is related to PBC.
I was 46 when diagnosed and will be 49 shortly. I was informed by my dentist prior to diagnose that my gums were starting to recede a bit but it is apparently an age factor.
I don't think urso can cause things like this myself. I see urso as a sort of supplement as opposed to a drug as such, the difference being urso is a type of bile acid that the body uses. I did get initial side-effects on starting urso (heartburn and a bit of bloating) but these soon vanished.
Your dentist will be able to inform you of the problem. A friend of mine was in her 30's years ago when she told me that she had something called gingervitis in her mouth. Not sure what that is but think that relates to sore gums possibly. All these years on (she is 52 now) she still has intact teeth.
I don't know if it is related to PBC but I do suffer with a sore tongue, but only on the tip which is very red. I suffer with a very dry mouth and frequently wake with my tongue stuck to the roof of my mouth so this may be the cause and certainly what I have been putting my soreness down to. I have had ulcers in the past but nothing more than what I used to get. I cannot say for sure exactly how long I have had the soreness for but it must have been for at least a year or so. I was diagnosed with PBC in Jan 2011. I am now 53 and have no problems what so ever with my teeth other than having a scale and polish every year.
My dentist declared to me last year that as he'd been seeing me for 5 years and my teeth were pretty much in decent condition, I currently only need to see him every 9 months as opposed to 6.
Long before I had symptons of PBC I informed my dentist that I don't go in for the scale and polish. Always used to be left with throbbing gums for days afterwards so I've only had it done twice in the last 5yrs.
It's not your toothbrush that is causing your tongue tip to be sore is it. I do often brush my tongue and if I rarely and it is rarely have something like a hard sweet that you tend to suck as opposed to chew I can find for a few days after I have a small ulcer on my tongue which is due to the tongue friction.
I don't have any dry mouth problems at all but know that some with PBC can suffer with it alongside dry eyes I also do not have.
My gums do get a little sore following the scale and polish. I make sure I gargle with salt water or corsodyl mouth wash afterwards and it normally settles down after a few hours.
I don't think its my toothbrush causing it but I may be wrong, because I tend to use a tooth brush that has a sort of ribbed rubber scraper on the back specially for cleaning the tongue and only tend to use it on the back of my tongue anyway.
I know what you mean about the hard sweets, I was offered one of the Rhubard and Custard sweets in work one day and it sliced my tongue its seemed to splinter and was really sharp.
I buy soft toothbrushes these days, have for several years. I find for me these work best.
I also prefer to buy a natural toothpaste without artificial chemicals and the foaming agent that is put in most preparatory brands. They may be a bit dearer but I think worth it.
Hi peridot, Where do you get your natural toothpaste from and what is it called
Hello again.
I've normally had the Kingfisher brand but there are others. Kingfisher you can buy with or without fluoride added. It comes in other flavours than just mint and we normally buy the fennel with an aniseed taste.
Holland & Barratt should sell it but if they have none stocked, they do other brands. It isn't cheap compared with the commercial brands but I think worth it plus I don't spend on make-up, etc so....
Beauty Naturals mail order (they used to be Martha Hill and if you put that in the Search on the net it will still come up), they sell various toothpastes and other natural cosmetics and toiletries (I buy their deodorants regularly). The p&p is free in England.
Thanks very much I'll definitely give it a go
Sore mouth and gums was the reason I went to the doctors when they found out I had pbc. It is no better ,in fact worse. They say there is nothing they can do. I have gum disease now with receding gums. At the moment I am being tested for Sjogrens . Maybe you should ask your consultant about this.
Hello yes I suffer with sore and bleeding gums, sometimes its hard to eat, however the dentist has said there is no sign of gum disease. I had a tooth inplant 2 years ago which went fine, I really think the bleeding gums and ulsers are down to pbc, although my specialist said its due to having a dry mouth but I don't think even the specialist know enough about our condition and all the syptoms its so annoying.
Ive had sore mouth and gums for years, a long time before diagnosis with PBC and whatever treatment I had, nothing improved. My dentist is now convinced the problems in my mouth are autoimmune; I have dry eyes and it is probable my saliva is effected as well.
Apart from taking advice from your dentist, good oral hygiene etc the best thing I found for bleeding gums and ulcers is to get a cotton bud and dip it in some peroxide and hold that on the area - guaranteed it will be healing by the next day.
i have sore mouth and tongue called lichen planus and there maybe a link to pbc. warm salt water keeps it clean and helps with pain, remember to boil the water 1st. Difflon is also a mouth wash and pain reliever, bought over the counter or on prescription I'm new to this site so I hope this helps
I too have lichen planus in the mouth. This is another example of an autoimmune condition quite common to those who have PBC. My dentist is fairly certain that my gum disease is aggravated by a dry mouth, which is also a symptom of PBC. You just can't get away from it ... !
I often get sore gums and mouth. This is put down to Sjogrens. I now use Biotene toothepaste and gel which I get on prescription.
Usually a sign of Vitamin B deficiency. Try berocca or what ever to up your dose a bit. Goodluck.
Hi
I was a Dental Nurse for 34 yrs and now a PBC sufferer, ( still work in dentistry) I also have ulcers and a sore mouth from time to time and bleeding gums, this is due to having a dry mouth which is a symptom of PBC and Sjorgans which I have been diagnosed with.
And as Lisacj said can be a deficiency of Vitamin B.
I was prescribed Biotene, the same Ellanvannin, the toothpaste, Mouthwash and gel, the mouth wash I find is the the most benefical, the gel makes me gag!!
Hope this helpful
I have sjogerns disease as well as pbc as well as osteoarthritis I have have been prescribed with an artificial saliva spray by my doctor
