My last blood test showed I had low platelets, which might explain the little bruises all over my hands and arms. I wondered if this was related to PBC. I know from scans that PBC has caused my spleen to become enlarged, could low platelets be related to this?

Does anyone know if low platelets are related to PBC?
Hi
My platelets were lower than should be at around 138 (should be over 150), so I was advised to have an endoscopy to check for esophageal varices, which are caused by scarring of the liver. Not sure what the connection to the spleen is, but it is all liver damage related. What were your platelet counts - the surgeon who did the endoscopy, really did not think there was any need to worry at 138. I think if they find varices, they do something called banding to stop the bleeding.
Talk to the doctor.

I have low platelets too-around 100-and I bruise quite easily but not as bad as your experience sounds. I saw a haemotologist when this was first seen (by my GP) who said that there was no other problem (as is possible), but the condition (thrombocytopaenia) was related to the liver. As far as I am aware the count would have to be below 50 before spontaneous bleeding occurs but oplease check this out with your consultant. I was diagnosed with PBC in 1994.Hope this helps.
