Shingrix

I had shingles starting in May, 2023. The numbness where the rash was has never gone away. I can have the vaccine now (didn't have it before) but I found a warning about it

fda.gov/vaccines-blood-biol...

Unfortunately, I am in the group of people (older with autoimmune disease) who are apt to get shingles a second time, but also among those more apt to have a reaction to the vaccine. I do not want to have shingles again, but I am anxious about the warning.

Has anyone with PBC had experience with Shingrix - negative or positive?

Cheers

Took both shots for shingles in 2021…was fine. My primary care doctor suggested the vaccine. Believe in the US, it is recommended for people age 50+.

Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS), a serious nervous system disorder, has been reported very rarely after Shingrix. There is also a very small increased risk of GBS after having shingles.

Follow whatever your doctor recommends for you.

Not had the vaccine yet, but I had shingles about 5 weeks ago I was waiting for it to fully clear up but I still have one patch, that’s not gone away, seems to be taking ages.

Candy, I believe you have to wait a year after having shingles before you can get the vaccine. I hope your shingles clears up soon. Thanx for your reply.

I didn’t know that thanks for sharing.

It was my GP who told me to wait a year. I just checked Dr. Google and found conflicting information. One source said you don't have to wait - just don't get it when shingles are still present. The other source said one year. Perhaps check with your doctor.

Google isn't always accurate. I would suggest talking with your pharmacist about it. They are so knowledgeable. Let us know what they say.

There has been a previous post about this vaccine. I had the 2 as I have post hepatic neuralgia thanks to a bout of shingles 3yrs old, (yep still painful) so didn't want another bout. I'm 53 and my medication suppress my immune system. 1st one fine though very sore arm and 2nd made me feel awful for a few days but for me worth it.

I had shingles two years ago. They were on my face in my ear and my scalp. Of course, all on one side . It was awful. I still have pins and needles like pain. Periodically. I have primary biliary, cirrhosis, rheumatoid arthritis, and thyroid disease. I did take the Shingrix vaccine. It’s a two-part. My Hepatologist said, there was no problem taking it. I had no adverse reaction whatsoever. and having had an awful case of shingles, I would never want to get that again.

I hope this helps

Everyone I know who has had shingles says how awful it was. Taking the 2 dose shingles vaccine seems to be a good thing.. especially now that those being immunocompromised can take it, as it's longer a live virus used in the vaccine.

I had the Shingrix vaccine today. No after effects.

When I booked the appointment for the shingrix shot, I asked the pharmacist about Guillain Barre and the vaccination. She said, "Oh, you can get that from any vaccine. Very rare." As mentioned above, I had the first jab yesterday with zero effect. Still fine this morning.

By the way, in British Columbia, the Shingrix vaccinations cost $175.00 Can. each.
