B and O type Blood and Alkaline Phosphatase and Labs have different ULN

I just started Urso last month, and had blood work done last week, the other enzymes dropped a lot to normal range, but Alkaline Phosphatase is still higher than normal, around 187, not much change.

I have 2 questions,

1. Anyone else with type O or B blood notice higher ALP if you aren't fasting? The doctor told me I didn't need to fast for these tests, then I recently came across research showing that ALP levels are elevated in people with type O or B blood if they don't fast.

2. I have had bloodwork done at 2 different labs, depending on which doctor ordered the tests, one lab I have been to has a ULN or 121, the other 157. Over time, I noticed my ALP is around 1.7x at the lab with the lower ULN and normal to 1.2 when performed at the lab with the higher ULN. Do all labs adjust for age? It seems weird they are always closer or in the normal range at one lab and higher at the other. I am 58.

Hello Gmama2. What an interesting observation regarding your lab work. I wish I had more insight for you, but I’ve been recently diagnosed and just had my first follow-up labs after being on Urso for 3 months. My AST and ALT are back into the normal range. My ALP is still elevated but much improved. I have fasted 8-10 hours prior to each blood draw per instructions, since the liver enzyme tests were part of a complete metabolic panel, including fasting glucose levels. I am blood type O. Could you post the article you referenced on blood type, fasting, and ALP levels? I’m seeing my hepatologist soon and will follow up on this.

Hello Gmama2.

I too would like to know the article you're referencing as all my LFTs have dropped or are dropping into normal ranges while my AlkPhos continues to rise. I've been on Urso (900mg) since February of this year after January diagnosis. I am O+ and fast only sometimes, depending on the time of day I can get an appointment at the lab.

Thanks for posting the question!

I'm curious if they ever ran this same sort of experiment with other blood types. What I'm understanding from the article is that it's the fatty meal the night before making a difference and not necessarily the blood type. Am I missing something? It's interseting nonetheless.

I do not eat red meat or pork since being diagnosed and am following the Gerson Method as much as possible, with the exception of eating fish and chicken with some meals, so I'll be interested to see if I can affect my numbers just from fasting before each draw.

The study could concludes this phenomenon is present in type O and B, it isn’t in type A.

I'm 57, taking Urso, and well within the normal range now but it took about 3 years to get there. Initially the ALP level came down but for quite a while it stayed a bit above normal and my doctor was ok with that. My blood type is O+. As for the differences in labs, pick one and stick with it. It makes it easier to know where you stand. Most doctors can accommodate that if you ask.

Good Morning...this is really interesting for sure. I recently had labs done. I always do fasting, but this time they said i did not need to. So all my labs are skewed,,,and yes, ALT was 18 points higher...Be Well

I have type O blood and my labs don’t seem to vary if I’m fasting or not.

Very interesting, it seems more pronounced if the meal is high calorie/high fat. I had been pretty careful sticking to my diet except happened to have pizza the night right before the test. I will retest after a month and make sure to fast.

Here is another study:

I'm blood group B. No one has mentioned different blood types. I've been on urso 10years now

my doctor insists I always fast for these tests.

I retested after fasting and my ALP dropped 32 points to 155. I’ll be curious to see if it keeps dropping.
