I know I am not supposed to take NSAIDs, but sometimes ibuprofen is the only medicine that works for severe joint and muscle pain. Tylenol does nothing for it. My doc says occasional use of ibuprofen is okay. Does anyone know if 2 ibuprofen a couple of times a week is safe for PBCers?

I am hopefully "early" in disease progression... and at 67 there are times when my neck pain just needs one ibuprofen to let me get some pain relief so i can sleep. Tylenol just doesn't have same effect..
I look at it as quality of life... of course I don't want to do things that tax my liver.. but I can't be in pain/not sleeping and miserable in the here and now. ugh.
I also look at my whole picture. I don't eat fried foods-hamburgers, french fries, no pizza.. cut out almost ALL bread.. etc. Cut out my beloved potato chips...
I lost 18 pounds- mostly belly fat... which is super hard on the liver..
I cut back sugar - no whole pieces of cake or pie, no cookies... no soda...
I eat tons of vegetables, leafy, only lean turkey or chicken and
When I had a few sports injuries, hepatologist okayed me taking ibuprofen per the directions on the bottle. I think I took it for 1-2 weeks for the inflammation in the injured part to go down.
Definitely OK, to take ibuprofen or aleve a couple of times a week. However, if you need to take anti-inflammatory meds longer, you should consider Celebrex (easier on the stomach). Talk to your doctor about it. I take aleve for pain occasionally and excedrin for strong headaches.
My doctor told me that the only drug I can take without getting permission or advice from her is paracetamol, as long as I keep to the normal limits of not more than 8 in 24 hours, no more than 2 at once. I've taken it regularly over the years, and have had no problems.
I get migraines daily pbc mctd eds and fibromyalgia I take fiorcet almost daily ibuprofen on occasion was told it was ok but wish I didn’t have to. The pain is horrible from the migraines only way to get some sleep
Thank you! Ibuprofen helps the best when I have severe joint and muscle pain.
My hepatologist told me I must not take ibuprofen as it’s toxic to the liver. I get a lot of headaches and joint pains, plus bad period cramps and paracetamol doesn’t cut it. He advised me to take mefanamic acid which is another non steroidal anti inflammatory but not toxic to the liver. My gp prescribes it and it works as just as well as ibuprofen for all pain.
Morning...I recently had a terrible case of laryngitis and sinus infection with fever. My hepatologist office recommended Alleve Liquid Gel capsules for this occasion. Routine aches and pains, he says no. Not to take any of that routinely. He did suggest CBD oil for reducing inflammation and muscle joint pain. Works great. Also, look at your diet as to what might be causing that joint pain. also, if you are post menopausal, joint pain could be related to hormonal changes. Don't you just love it!!! Be well
I stopped all over the counter pain relievers on diagnosis and now eat a teaspoon of organic turmeric root daily. I was skeptical at first, but now I’m a believer. For pain related to strains, sprains and other injuries, I’ve heard that ibuprofen gel applied topically reduces the impact on the liver over the oral formulations.
Hi, interesting regarding topical Ibuprofren. I'm not aware of any product available. I'd be interested in trying.. but don't seem to find any on the market. Can you point me to some? Thanks
