Went to see my consultant and now need a bone test for a diagnosis.

He said i may need to see another consultant if i have osteophrosis.

I was really fed up as he said it could take a few weeks but as i told him i work full time and the pain is un bearable at times.

He said to get a sick note. This will not pay the bills.

Anyone else in this situation. So annoying . All i want is a pain free

Hi I’m in a similar situation to you, I’m in constant pain with my feet ankles and knee, my consultant ordered a bone density scan which I had back in March, not heard anything but she did say results would be sent to the consultant ready for my next appointment. With me being self employed I can’t afford to lots of time off as I don’t get paid .....catch 22

People with pbc are more suspectible to osteoporosis. When I was diagnosed with pbc, my hepatologist ordered a bone density scan to set as a baseline for comparison. We are supposed to have bone density tests every few years.

He also checked my vitamin D levels. If you are low in D, that can also cause bone pain.

While it is annoying it is in your best interests to take care of your health. Hopefully your employer will be accomodating.

Hi i have very low vitamin D but alergic to the supplement.

And yes my employer is great but its not great when you have time off

You can get vitamin D via fortified foods & staying out in sun for 15-20 minutes a day.

hi hope u get sorted soon can they not give u anything more in pain relief to tide u over i have a bone scan end of mth i am in constant pain but put mine down to my fibromyalgia i have pbc and apparently the conditions overlap in symptoms suggestion for u if bone scan comes back normal ask to see rheumatologist as thse are the only ones that diagnose fibro it dpes nt show on bloods or scans it purely on symptons and physical exam good luck x

I have osteoporosis for 20 years and have had dexa scans(this is specific for osteoporosis). Bone scans are looking for other things. I am in USA and maybe they use the term bone scan interchangeably. Also, I have never had bone pain. In osteoporosis the bones thin out and makes you vulnerable for fractures. I take an injection twice a year called prolia. This has reversed my condition and now I am in osteopenia. In Us you get a dexa scan when you turn 50. The test takes about 15 minutes. No pain involved.Ellyne

For those with pbc, dexa scan can be done prior to 50 as long as your doctor deems it necessary.

Why prior to 50? Dexa scan can be done on anyone postmenopausal

Because women with pbc are more suspectible to osteoporosis than the average population. So it would make sense to have a dexascan regardless of one’s age even if they are younger than 50.

Yes but you said prior to 50 as long as Dr deems necessary. That was my question.

Your doctor has to order it to have it covered under insurance. & I believe the norm for the Dexa scan is mainly for postmenopausal women. I am saying you should get it if you have pbc even if you are younger than 50.

Yes I’m aware of how it works. My dr recommends at 40.
