My consultant has just suggested that I should take 400mg Bezafibrate modified release tablet once a day. It is not something I have heard of and was just wondering if anyone else takes them and how they have got on with them. I already take 1000mg of Urso per day. Look forward to your replies - good or bad 😀
Bezafibrate: My consultant has just suggested... - PBC Foundation
Bezafibrate
Hi @IOW-gal
I seemed to remember reading about Bezafibrate on a study paper. I had a quick look and I think it may have been this document from April last year. I have no personal experience of Bezafibrate but was interested because of the reduction reported in the so called itch of PBC. If you try it I would be interested to know how you get on. best wishes

Hello butterfly Ei
Thank you for your reply and for the link. It all sounds quite positive but we'll have to wait and see. I don't see my consultant until the end of March but I may be able to approach my GP to prescribe as I know he has had the information from the consultant. Once again many thanks. Eileen
Hi there,
I have been taking fenofibrate, a similar medication, for the last couple of years as well as urso as I was not getting a complete response with the urso alone. My liver function test results have pretty much returned to within normal limits with fenofibrate added and I have had no side effects, so for me it has worked very well.

Hi
I have been taking 400mg bezafibrate for a year now along with 1000mg urso.
My ALTs were very high and this combination of tablets stabilised my bloods.
Take them on a full stomach as they can make you feel sick.
Good luck

Hi i was a non responder to Urso anf have been on bezafibrate for over 6 months now
Same here non responder to Urso and after adding bezafibrate my liver panel went to near normal within three months no side effects at all! So happy and relieved. Good luck!
Hi IOW-gal
My consultant has also suggested starting me on Bezafibrate as my LFTs are not improving sufficiently on URSO. I have googled a bit (dangerous I know) and there seems to have been recent clinical trials with good results. My consultant also thinks that it will help me with the itching, I am currently on Questran but it hasn't helped much. I am seeing him on 13th March. I think it is worth a try. I would love to know how you get on.
Thanks for the reply jjones78. My consultant said the same to me. She was hoping my LFT numbers would be better than they are, so it has been suggested that I add Bezafibrate to the existing URSO. I will certainly let you know if things improve or not. I think if things do not improve the next step is Ocaliva, but that is very expensive I believe.
I’d wait to see if you can get enzymes close to normal thru diet and lifestyle
I was diagnosed 2006/2007 and put on urso 1000mg. Lfts continued to rise. I read an article suggesting fibrates might work for urso nonresponders. Requested my GP in 2011. Have been on 400mg since then. Lfts came back down under control. Now I read that fibrates are NICE approved! Good job that my start was years ago. I consider my PBC as stable (some liver damage) . IOW girl - I'm a Sussex boy.
I take 1000mg urso a day, my professor also introduced Bezalip a year ago to be taken once a day, my bloods have come down to near normal.
Have no side affects....
