the main ingredient is Ursodeoxycholic Acid, the differences between manufacturers is the fillers used. Most people who take URSO tolerate the different manufacturers.

It is best not to chew or crush any medication which clearly states "do not chew or crush" in the patient information leaflet. Do speak to the pharmacist though they may be able to help your concerns.

There is another form of Ursodeoxycholic Acid, Ursofalk Suspension, if you find taking the film coated tablet difficult (although being film coated hopefully it will be easier) then your doctor may be able to prescribe this liquid for you. There are also 500mg tablets which, if the doctor can prescribe them, will reduce the number of tablets you need to take. Have you tried spreading the dose through the day rather than all at once, in your circumstances the doctor may suggest this as an alternative was of getting the medication into your system.

Do you eat bread or banana? You may find that popping the medication in your mouth and swallowing with a good sized glass of water followed by some bread or something soft like banana will help push the tablet down.

Hope the above is helpful, best wishes

thank you for replying’ I took the first tab today and I’m going to follow the instructions of one in morning 2 at lunchtime and 2 at night I think, as I’m on 1.250 Mg daily, I did take it while in middle of eating porridge quite milky and banana in also, it did go down im finding my throat feels bruised heavy sensation hard to explain, I did see that you can get suspension too lemon flavoured I think it was and cherry! Which one do you take? Obviously im going to try and persevere and try and see how I go with these tablets, I just want to get on with my life as best I can and don’t want to be a nuisance to anyone keep changing meds, but on the other hand I don’t want to be in a position where im getting stressed over this situation five times a day every day.

I have never taken those however,, I have great difficulty swallowing anything .. I always take my capsules with a small bite of banana, pop the capsule in your mouth just before you need to swallow it, take a small a sip of water, the banana helps them slide down. You could try a smoothie which is where I started, but I got fed up with making them to take my urso ,so I just use small bite of banana now it’s quicker.

I also keep by me the liquid form of Ursofalk ( the branded urso) for the days it’s really bad and I can’t get them down that way. Some people say the taste is really bad but I can tolerate it it’s okay.

I also take half my urso in the morning and half in the evening trying to take 4 all at once is a nightmare. My reason for swallowing difficulty is caused by a oesophageal web which I’am due to get a dilation procedure next month, fingers crossed it helps so I can eat proper food again instead of all the soft options.

As for tablets I can’t swallow any now, but be careful of crushing tablets and get advice first, the pharmacy may say no if that’s what’s on the Patient leaflet mine did when I asked about my other medication Bezalip ( Bezafibrate) unknown to me I was taking a slow release tablet once a day. Crushing them would mean too much medication would be released at once and depending on the type of medication that can be dangerous.

Speaking with the GP about my issue he changed the prescription to the normal release twice a day tablet and I can crush them. Even then I still have to have the mashed banana followed by a glass of water to wash it all down. Hope you get past your difficulty it’s awful not being able to swallow properly.

hi candy, which flavour suspension do you take. My way of taking tabs is or capsules as I have very dry mouth I make sure I take quite bit of water in mouth before I even start to take meds swish it round mouth then put med at back of tongue as far as I can although usually it more middle, then take a lot of water to get them down small complete bottle of water, I only have trouble it seems with big tabs capsules little sizes no problem to get down, I’m finding I can cope so far with Pbc only very early days though 2 weeks since started meds, Are you taking mercap I’m on 75mg of that and 5 Mg pred , weekly blood tests for next 4 weeks and then hep is thinking of putting me on budesnide spelt wrong 9mg but obviously depends on results

I’ve had PBC 13 years and still only need Urso and Bezafibrate , all bloods are normal so no other meds are needed. I don’t take any other meds for any other condition thankfully. My tablet taking problem started with dry mouth some 5 years ago. I just checked the bottle and it doesn’t seem to say a flavour. If I had to explain the taste I’d say citrus with an yucky after taste but tolerable. I go for anything in liquid formulation now, even if I need a paracetamol I take dissolvable ones, my iron is liquid and my vitamin D is a spray all so much easier.

Is it possible to have a liquid version?

Hi , I’ve been on ursodeoxycholic acid since 2006. I’ve always swallowed the capsules whole as this is what is recommended. I did swallow a burst capsule once and the taste of the powder was vile to say the least. Unfortunately that’s all I can tell you regarding your query.

I think the problem is worse as I have a thyroid goitre which is not helping the situation yes I swallowed them whole too jennymora79 are you getting on ok, what is your dose if you don’t mind me asking ?

I take Ursodiol in capsule form. Frequently, about 2-3 minutes after I swallow them, they "explode" in my throat and I get a puff of powder shot up into my mouth. I drink a lot of water every time I take them and it still happens. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Hello, you shouldn’t be struggling like this; ask your GP for Urso liquid; my friend has swallowing difficulties and this has been a Godsend to her. I wish you all the best 😊

thank you Tuppence I’m going to have a go with the tablets and if I can’t get on with them I will certainly ask for the liquid x

I have cholurso or ursonorm usually. Im prescribed 500mg tablets.Ask your GP to prescribe the 500mgs. If you're on 5x 250mgs a day, you could reduce the amount of tablets you need to take if you're prescribed 500mgs

Eternity6 profile image
Eternity6 in reply tocreedy1

exactly what I thought Creedy1 if I could have 500mg I’d be taking less tabs , that would be wonderful to take less

ninjagirlwebb profile image
ninjagirlwebb in reply toEternity6

Think your doctor can prescribed the 500 mg for you in tablet format and you can take 2.5 of them if it is okay to cut one 1/2. Or maybe just take 3 of them instead if your doctor agrees.

I can either take 300 mg x 3 or 500 mg x 2. My doctor said probably easier to take the 2 instead of 3. The difference is only 100 mg so no big deal.

No sadly my hep wants me to take 1.250 Mg I’ve now got the second lot of the cholurso 250mg tabs and I have to take 5 a day 60 in pack and my GP will only give me one pack at time which sounds a bit crazy having to keep requesting these so often

ninjagirlwebb profile image
ninjagirlwebb in reply toEternity6

Not sure how healthcare works in the UK but only giving you 60 at a time is not efficient. Your doctor probably wants to see if you respond to the meds well before prescribing more. Only reason I can think of.

I’ve had to fight constantly getting GP to order 3 months supply for things. I do understand that if it’s a new drug (especially if expensive) they will want to trial it first but once it’s established that’s what you will be taking long term, INSIST you get longer term supplies. I had to fight for it & they now get it, & it’s more trouble fir them when I have to keep calling them about it. So it’s all sorted now. I have so many prescriptions I can’t keep going to the pharmacy for small amounts!! It’s a massive stress on top of just keeping myself well.

Couldn’t agree more, I’m having blood tests each week so hopefully I get this permanantly it’s such a pain having to request it so often

I wish that I could help. I started on 500 mg Ursodiol four years ago—-I do swallow them whole, as directed, without difficulty and responding well.

With all good wishes

I refuse any tablets at all from my GP anymore. I was on doxycycline for four years for severe dry, eye , and no one told me that you must drink it with tons of water, but it’s well known to cause irritation of the oesophagus, and it can burn through it, I started having really serious Motility problems with my oesophagus, and now I absolutely will not take no from the GP when it comes to medications being in a dominate/liquid form. And it’s been a very very serious uphill battle with my Gp & pharmacist in the GP Surgery. There have been notes on my file for four years now, not to give me solid pills or capsules, but I don’t look at it and I keep doing it and I make a trip to the pharmacy and I just have to give it back in Call surgery. It’s been an utter nightmare, but I absolutely will never ever take solid pills or even take the capsules, because that is a raw chemical that is meant to be taken in a capsule form protected. So if you have issues with swallowing it like I do you really need to make sure that you’re not taking something that’s going sit in your throat & damage it. . Even just the tiny particles. Luckily, I have had many investigations into and it has been diagnosed and I have a nativity property and various other things so my GP has to listen to me. Being ill is not fun!
