I saw my consultant yesterday, he seemed pleased with my latest scan and bloods, but did some more ordered a scan plus a bone density to check for osteoporosis and wants to me the usual 6/8 months. Just wondering if anyone else has had one.

I did 2 bone density scans: 3 years apart. First one to establish baseline for comparison. It is a norm to have scan as pbc patients are prone to osteoporosis.

I have had 3 in 17 years. It is very simple and doesn`t take long.

Hi Margaret59

My Consultant also sent me for the bone density scan and it showed Osteopenia which is the onset of Osteoporosis. So I was glad they had caught it early and I was able commence calcium tablets. Blessed to have a consultant who is very thorough.

I have oestopenia . Was told to uptake my calcium with food. My vit d and calcium levels were also checked by blood tests , all normal . I have read that calcium supplements should not be taken on there own as the calcium can deposit in the arteries . It has to be taken with Vit D and something else . I’m not quite sure . May be worth checking it out . My bloods came back with normal liver function apart From my albumin being down to3. 4 should be 3. 5. I was very shocked liver enzymes normal , my alt , Alk phos and gamma were all quite high .i have been on Urso for three months . I am very grateful . Waiting to hear frI’m my specialist Miriam x .

I've had 3 DXA scans. The actual process is very easy, doesn't take long, and is nothing to worry about.

The important thing is the results!

Had my 2nd bone density scan this year and found out I have osteoporosis in right hip, osteopenia in left hip and spine; so I take fosamax once a week along with daily calcium/vitamin d supplement. I'm 63 and was diagnosed with PBC in 2012, I take a lot of medicines, but feel pretty good most days and enjoy life.

When did you do your first bone density scan? I need to ask my doctor how often we should check.

I had my first one several years ago (it showed osteopenia), but my liver doctor had been wanting me to have another one done for the last couple of years. He also reminds me every year to get a mammogram and have my thyroid checked. Probably need to have bone density checked every couple of years.

Thanks. Will ask hepatologist when I see him.

Good that your liver doctor reminds you of the other check ups too.

I have one every three years it seems quite a lot of us do. We're more open to our bones softening due to lack of calcium absorption. Xx
