Hi Steelie

I have had osteopenia for at least 5 years and it has yet to progress to osteoporosis which is good ( most recent dexa scan 3 weeks ago). I am 52 with widespread cirrhosis and was diagnosed with PBC at 38.

Cheers

Take calcium supplements & vitamin D daily. Do weight bearing exercises. This will help with maintaining bone mass.

in reply to

Don't drink colas or too much coffee; they leak calcium from your bones making it weaker.

Thanks for the advice

I’ve been taking 2 calcium tablets a day for 2yrs and a victim D once a day ever since I was diagnosed with PBC .

That's great. It could have been worse if you didn't do this. Do strength training 2-3 times a week to maintain bone mass. Consult with your doctor for additional suggestions.

I guess I am lucky. I don't eat foods that cause arthritis like symptoms such as caffeine and night shades. I guess they caught it early and I reacted well to the ursodol

ursodoil is working very good even with alcohol drinking for me as well...my liver panel is normal except vit b12 which was very high so been told to cut down on that vit...I don’t have diet restriction but recently I’m diagnosed with reactive hypoglycemia so I have to be very careful with carbs now..only problem I’m having right now is fatigue for 45 mins or an hour and whole body heats up like I have a 110 fever after I eat.. we still couldn’t figure out yet why my body heats up 😔 beside that I’m healthy as normal people

Remind me what stage you are?

in reply toBonnieanne54

How do they track what stage you are in? Biopsies or bloodwork?

Karaliz profile image
Karaliz in reply to

The stage relates to liver damage rather than PBC specifically.

Only a biopsy can determine a stage.

According to my dr, my liver has zero scarring. My stage 2 (low end), is mild/moderate scarring in duct.

my biopsy 22 years ago showed no scarring so based n that and the enzymes I was labeled stage one. The fibroscan I took last year showed no scaring and great elasticity so Im going to go with the enzymes until further notice

I have osteopenia. I do bone density scans every other year. Urso is said impact the bones. Make sure you take enough calcium and Vit D. I check Vit D level once a year during my annual, to make sure it's normal. Vid D is needed for better absorption of calcium.

How much calcium & vit d do you take. Right now I take 1200 calcium w/1000 vit d

in reply togwillistexas

I take a multivitamin, vitamin D 2,000 IU, Citracal 630 mg includes Vitamin D of 500 IU, & fish oil.

nycgirl2012, when I had my hysterectomy in 1995, my dr said take 1600 calcium daily. I got off it somewhere along the way. I am taking Citracal 1200/1000 vit d3.

in reply togwillistexas

I only started the calcium recently. I injured myself running due to over use of knee. So I went for a another bone density test. Had one done a few years ago. Anyway, I lost some bone density so I decided to take calcium in addition to my multi. I shared that with my Hepatologist & he said that I had a perfect plan.

I’ve only been taking it again about a month. I asked about Omega 3 & Dr said ok to take. How much do you take?

in reply togwillistexas

I take Nature Made fish oil 1200 mg, I take 2 with a meal. Pre PBC, I took a multi & the fish oil. Only added vitamin D when Hepatologist tested me for D. He gave me prescription strength D for like 3 weeks to build it up, then the over the counter D daily for maintenance. He told me to go out in sun for 10-15 minutes a day. My dermatologist said to take supplements instead as sun is damaging to our skin.

Yes, my dr said grab all the sunshine I can. I will be having d checked soon. Mine was very low several years ago along with b12 being depleted. B12 shots for 3 months & script for d. Both got back where needed to be. I slacked off. I take sublingual b complex that has b12 also.

in reply togwillistexas

What made the doctor test for. B12?

I lost my dad in 2010. After being with him 14 days at the hospital & all day for 2 weeks at hospice, I was run down. So I went for check up. That was one of many things they checked.

in reply togwillistexas

Sorry about your dad...sounds stressful.Do you get B12 tested on a regular basis now?

gwillistexas profile image
gwillistexas in reply to

Thank you. I still miss him so much. Was such a sweety & I’m the only child. No I don’t have it checked regularly. My Internist will check if I ask, especially if I’m feeling tired. But now the good ole PBC does that sometimes. Hard to tell.

Losing a loved one just leaves a hole in your heart. Time doesn't heal it; just learned to live with it. Take care of yourself!

Once I finished shots, he said take sublingual because as we age the stomach lining doesn’t absorb pills very well.
