Scan today: Hi all I am going for my liver... - PBC Foundation
Scan today
Good luck. Try not to worry I know it's hard just wait and see what happens.
hi, it's understandable to be worried. It's unlikely they will tell you anything on the day, so try not to worry. The whole process of being diagnosed with PBC is frightening, mostly because it's fear of the unknown. This forum is very good for having support in allaying some of those fears.
I was diagnosed just before christmas and had my ultrasound scan also just before christmas. My scan showed that there was no damage to my liver, but I do have PBC. Having the scan confirm that there's no damage or any gallstones forming has been very comforting as my bloods suggested there may be damage.
Hopefully you will also have a similarly good result. Just look at the scan as a positive - it will inform and you will know better as to what you're dealing with.
Good luck
It seems not a great deal can be seen regarding PBC on an ultrasound, they told me it was routine to make sure nothing else was going on. A bit like an elimination process. X
I agree with you teddybear7. Here is a segment from the "Investigation" section of an article on PBC:
"Thyroid function should be assessed and monitored.
Imaging of the liver is useful to exclude causes of obstruction like stones. Ultrasound is most commonly used but CT and MRI scanning may be employed. As the disease progresses there may be features suggestive of portal hypertension and cirrhosis.
Cholangiography is occasionally helpful in order to exclude primary sclerosing cholangitis.
Transient elastography is a non-invasive tool to evaluate the degree of liver fibrosis.[17]
Finally, liver biopsy is required to stage the disease. Histology will demonstrate chronic nonsuppurative cholangitis of the interlobular and septal bile ducts.:
