Hi everyone, just wondering if anyone who received a liver transplant because of pbc has had it reoccur, and if so what happens next ?

Hi, Mops

I hope life is treating you well since your transplant.

To answer your question, technically your PBC has never gone away. Transplant is not a cure, as such, just a swapping of circumstances. So everyone with a transplant still has PBC.

Does it reoccur in a way that can affect the patient? Yes, sometimes it does. Most of the time, it comes back in a way that is managed by medication. Occasionally, there is a need for a second transplant. I need to stress the word occasionally.

The PBC post-transplant figures (last time I checked) are the most successful of all the reasons for liver transplant, in terms of years of life after transplant. They are well above average in terms of survival rates, from memory.

In terms of what happens next, I imagine you are already being well monitored by your liver team (I am assuming Edinburgh), and they will continue to monitor and appropriately medicate for your PBC, if necessary.

This is a general answer. Feel free to contact the Foundation directly and we can help you with your situation specifically.

Yours,

Robert.

Hi Robert, thanks for the speedy reply, kind of similar to what I have been told, that I still have pbc but it's not in my liver and that urso was not licensed for prophylaxis treatment so it was not prescribed, now though since January my liver function tests have been off and my prograf was increased but they are still not right now I have been told that the pbc may have returned or I may have a grumbling rejection going on, either way I will probably need a biopsy to determine what's going on, I knew there was always a possibility that the pbc could affect my new liver I just didn't expect it so soon, 💖
