Magnesium supplements

Hi, I have been taking a small dose of magnesium powder (which I add to orange juice which may be wrong) the last few days, but I have found that I am now having loose bowel and a bit of IBS symptoms. I wondered if it is connected. My 💩 had been fairly normal up to then, but as soon as I add in magnesium, it affects me. I haven’t changed anything else in my protocol.

I’m also suffering with severe fatigue again the last week. Which is probably expected at 4 months into EOD injections, so I suppose it could be the tiredness, but seems a bit of a coincidence.

How much magnesium is in the dose you're taking and what form (glycinate etc)?

I was having about 1/2 teaspoon. When I took a whole teaspoon I ended up with stomach cramps for a whole day!

Hello,

I had to finally change to magnesium cream and gel and put on my skin on legs at night. I tried and tried for take orally and I had loose stool for months, it tried powder and pills, both I could not keep anything in me. I hope this helps, and I also have a weak stomach to begin with from the b12D and gastritis I'm trying to heal but the Mag. did not help.

2/3 of these Magnesium forms are for relieving constipation and used more as a laxative. If that's not the intended purpose I would switch to a normal magnesium supplement thats designed purely for absorption, not laxative effects (such as Glycinate or Taurate).

The dosage is not clear but 250mg is usually more than enough unless you have a deficiency. 125mg twice a day with meals might be easier on the digestion. If you need it...

Techno is is spot on. The type of magnesium matters. Mag citrate will cause loose bowels. Tech pies recommendation of glucinate or taut ate forms is what I take. Also eat some fiber like Brussels sprouts. I take one in the morning on an empty stomach and one at night. Take it one hour away from any animal protein or calcium (animal protein has calcium), as magnesium and calcium are antagonists and prevent absorption of each other when taken together.

Any form of magnesium pill gives me intestinal problems, so I now stick to epsom salt baths in the hope that enough of it gets absorbed.

Did your bloods show you need a magnesium supplement? If giving you jip

No magnesium seemed fine on test results. It’s just I’m on a vitamin D & K protocol and they recommend magnesium as well.

Would use the actual Mg supplements recommended by the Vit D Wellness FB group.

As one of the others said, the effect of various types of Mg supplement differs, some are good for helping sleep, some for relieving constipation, etc. so you need to be selective and take the right one at the right time.

Multivitamins often don't have enough of the individual ingredients to be effective. Epsom salt baths are great, but hard to be sure how much you are absorbing or to have enough baths. Not tried the cream.

As not everyone is a facebook member, could you tell us what they recommend?

I got to this group as it is recommended by the B12 Society who have a similar FB group for B12 deficiency. The OP mentioned they were in a Vit D group so I thought it may well be this one.

Their standard protocol is as follows with the Mg being on the second para:

"We suggest 5,000 units of D3 along with 100mcg of K2 the first week. The second week, you'll increase the D3 to 10,000 units. You can continue with 100mcg of K2. Or, you can increase to 200mcg. Either is fine. Be sure that you're taking D3 and K2 at the end of a meal (preferably breakfast) that contains at least 14 grams of healthy fats.

We suggest starting with 200 mg magnesium glycinate about an hour before bed each night for the first week. Increase to 500mg each night after that. After a month of taking 500mg, we suggest adding magnesium malate earlier in the day (and continue with the glycinate). Magnesium malate can be taken at the same time as K2 and D3 as long as your breakfast didn't include foods rich in calcium (and as long as it's separated from medication by the appropriate amount of time). Magnesium and calcium should be separated by an hour."

They have recommendations on brands depending on additives etc. But that is more complicated as it changes from time to time and with your location and availability.

Recommendations for Uk include

Glycinate - Yoursupplements, Solaray or Herbology

Malate - Doublewood or Swanson for powder

Be careful that is the amount of elemental magnesium in each that you are looking for not the amount of the compound which is normally in bigger type.

Thank you for that, I found it helpful.

I have been studying Vitamin D3 and found it helpful to review the studies done with the focus on physical performance.

This protocol doesn't make a lot of sense unless its for treating vitamin D and Magnesium deficiency which AFAIK are two conditions that Chickens44 doesn't have. The moderate amounts of Calcium present in foods is not going to affect Magnesium absorption either. I would be worried too about what many people understand to be "healthy fats".

No multuvits give a good background though .You only need big dosesof individual supplements if bloods say deficient in them.

Csn make you feel worse or extra symptoms as posted .

Can't be good?

Scientist, not medic.

'Epsom Salts' [Magnesium Sulphate] has been used as a laxative for a very long time indeed. It's not surprising you may encounter loose bowels! It's probably not very important what chemical form the magnesium comes in, as once it's dissolved, you've got Magnesium Ions in the solution.

I can’t take magnesium in tablet form as it does the same to me. I use a BetterYou body magnesium spray and it works fine. You can purchase on EBay or BetterYou direct. 200mgs in 10 sprays and you just massage into your skin.

Why on earth are you taking magnesium supplements?

Chickens44 profile image
Chickens44 in reply toBellabab

As I said above, the Vitamin B wellness group advised taking magnesium alongside vitamin D & K. I’m waiting for the results of a test to see what my magnesium levels are currently. They have been fine in the past.

I think its better to take a multivitamin supplement than odd unbalanced doses of various single vitamins - I take one Centrum Advance 50 Plus multivitamins a day. I do add a vitamin D in the Winter as I do not see much sun then.
